Gigabyte is also taking out its GeForce RTX series graphics cards, in this review we look at its new Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2080 GAMING OC 8G. A model with the Windforce 3X cooling system that seeks to squeeze all the benefits of the new Turing architecture, such as the Tensor Core and Ray Tracing in real time.

Many thanks to Gigabyte for the trust placed in lending us the product for analysis.

Gigabyte RTX 2080 GAMING OC 8G Technical features

Unboxing and design

We begin this review with our photo shoot of the product box presentation. The card comes inside a very colorful cardboard box, with a high-quality print based on the brand's colors. The box shows us all its most outstanding characteristics and specifications.

Once we open the box, we find the Gigabyte RTX 2080 GAMING OC 8G very well protected so that it does not suffer any damage during transport, next to the card we see all the documentation.

Gigabyte RTX 2080 GAMING OC 8G is based on a new design that somewhat resembles the Aorus series that Gigabyte delivers. Gigabyte has completely customized the card, so we found nothing of the reference design.

Gigabyte offers a triple slot cooling solution, with a large aluminum radiator and three 82mm fans, the additional coating cools all key components of the graphics card, including VRAM and MOSFET zones, to ensure stable overclocking operation and a longer lifespan.

The card remains passive up to a GPU temperature of 60 degrees C, the fans don't even spin. The radiator is crossed by several copper heatpipes in order to maximize its cooling capacity.

The Gigabyte RTX 2080 GAMING OC 8G does not want to compromise on aesthetics, so it includes the advanced Gigabyte RGB Fusion lighting system, which is software configurable in 16.8 million colors and various light effects. The application will allow us to synchronize the lighting with other compatible products, so that everything goes together.

This graphics card has been equipped with a Turing GPU based on the 12nm FinFet architecture and with 13.6 billion transistors, inside it has 2944 CUDA Cores that are accompanied by 46 RT Core and 368 Tensor Core. This card has 8 GB of GDDR6 memory with a 256-bit interface and a speed of 14 Gbps, which gives a bandwidth of 484 GB / s. The operating frequencies for the core are 1515 MHz base and 1815 MHz turbo.

We have already talked about a large number of new technologies of the Turing architecture, which offers a fundamental change in the field of graphics cards since, along with its normal shading engine, Nvidia has added RT (Raytracing) and Tensor (AI cores).). About a dozen RTX games are in development, and a dozen announced titles will use DLSS technology to improve performance.

The TU104 chip contains six GPC, 48 SM, and eight 32-bit memory controllers (256 bits total). Each SM includes 64 hatch processors, 256 KB of registration, 96 KB of data cache / shared memory, and four texture units. It also offers a x8 NVLink link that provides 25GB / s of bandwidth in each direction.

The card has a 225 watt TDP, 75 watts are delivered through the PCIe slot, then 75W and 150 watts through the 6 and 8 pin PCI Express power connectors.

At the rear we highlight the presence of a robust aluminum backplate, which adds rigidity to the set, and protects the delicate components of this area of the PCB. Very big and heavy graphics cards like this can bend over time, the PCB helps a lot to avoid this.

As for the video outputs of the Gigabyte RTX 2080 GAMING OC 8G, we find the video outputs in the form of an HDMI 2.0b port and three DisplayPort connectors, as well as a VirtualLink connector for virtual reality. The GeForce RTX series has DisplayPort 1.4a ready connectors, allowing compatibility with 8K displays at 60Hz.

Detaching the heatsink and looking at the PCB

Once we disassemble the heatsink we can see that the GDDR6 memory chips are made by Micron with the label D9WCW.

This is a type of graphics memory with a speed of 14 effective Gbps. The photos show the TU104 GPU, labeled as the 400A revision, meaning it is an overclocking ready GPU.

The graphics card is powered by a robust VRM system consisting of 10 power phases, more than enough for a card with an official 225W TDP like this. Gigabyte has placed thermal pads on the VRM components to prevent them from overheating, this way they will work more stable and wear less with use. The heatsink has six copper heatpipes as we can see in the photos.

Test bench and performance tests

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal.3DMark Fire Strike 4K version.Time Spy.Heaven Superposition.VRMark.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap to 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Synthetic benchmarks

This time, we've narrowed it down to five tests as we consider them to be more than enough as synthetic performance tests.

Game Testing

As we have commented in the review of the Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti, we have renewed the old Tomb Raider 2016 for the new Tomb Raider this year. The rest of the tests in games remain the same. Let's hope you like the results!

Overclocking

Note: Remember that overclocking or manipulation carries a risk, always do it at your own risk.

We recommend that you install the EVGA Precision application, since it allows us to apply advanced overclock without much difficulty. In this case it offers 90 more points, although we have been able to scratch about 95 points in the core.

Temperature and consumption

Very important fact: The consumption is of the entire team. Directly from the wall socket.

Final words and conclusion about Gigabyte RTX 2080 GAMING OC 8G

Gigabyte has done a great job with its Gigabyte RTX 2080 GAMING OC 8G graphics card. Very good components, reference PCB with 8 power phases, 8 GB of GDDR6 memory and a high quality triple heatsink.

We recommend reading best graphics cards on the market

We do not see major differences from the reference Nvidia RTX 2080. We have a better heatsink that allows us to raise the overclock a little more, but it barely drops 3 ºC at maximum power. Another advantage is that the Windforce heatsink keeps the fans stopped up to 60 ºC, and at rest it is always at 53 ºC.

Currently we can buy it for a price of 869 euros. Leaving aside the mere fact whether it is worth it or not with respect to a GTX 1080 Ti (if you already have it, of course), we believe that it is a price according to the high-end of the previous generation. It is currently available in online stores for sale and is a recommended purchase for new configurations.

ADVANTAGE

DISADVANTAGES

+ DESIGN

- IT IS NOT A JUMP ON THE GTX 1080 TI. LIKE ALL RTX 2080s.

+ GOOD FAN

+ ALLOWS YOU TO DO SOMETHING MORE OC THAN THE REFERENCE

+ VERY GOOD PERFORMANCE FOR 4K

+ RAY TRACING AND DLSS
