Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC is the first GPU with PCB and custom heatsink that we are going to analyze from this new update from Nvidia for its flagship. A graphics card whose performance will put it at the top, just like the reference model. Gigabyte has used a WINDFORCE 3X heatsink with 3D Fan Active technology and RGB Fusion lighting on the side. In addition, this model features a slight 30 MHz factory overclocking along with its 15.5 Gbps memories, which we will surely increase to its performance limit.
Ready for another display of graphics power? Well, let's start with our review, but not before thanking Gigabyte for the loan of this GPU to carry out our analysis, a trusted partner who always cares that everything comes to us as soon as possible.
Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC technical features
Unboxing
Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC is presented to us in a double box to match the quality and price of the product at hand. First of all, we have a flexible cardboard box, which doubles as a wrapper, with Gigabyte's big robotic eye relentlessly looking at our happy face when brand new toy. Behind, the manufacturer details the characteristics of the custom heatsink that this GPU has, nothing that we have not seen more than 100 times (luckily).
We remove the outer box and then we have a second one with a box-type opening, black and made of thick rigid cardboard. We see that inside it is the card perfectly accommodated in a polyethylene foam mold and in turn put in an antistatic bag.
The purchase bundle includes the following elements:
- Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC Graphics Card Support DVD User Manual
And that would be it, we don't even have the DisplayPort - DVI adapter that comes with the reference model, which would have been a positive thing. If we are thinking of creating a dual GPU setup, we recommend purchasing the AORUS Two-Way NVLink Cable. The truth is that it would be a great detail for users to include a purchase card for this device in case we wanted to SLI.
Exterior design
The Nvidia RTX 2080 Super is the last of the three new GPUs that the green giant has launched on the market this July 2019. Three models that acquire the Turing architecture with a refresh of the chipsets of their directly superior models except this last model. The 2080 Super implements the same TU104 but with an improvement in cores, cache and speed of the memories and GPU to make the most of this chipset. And after the departure of the reference model on July 23, now it's time for custom models, and one of the first to come out will be this Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC.
What we have today is the GPU that will be the top of the range in this family of Gigabyte RTX 2080, waiting for what AORUS has in its facilities. A marvel to behold thanks to the iconic WINDFORCE 3X heatsink with triple fan. But on top of it we have a hard plastic casing with a design practically the same as the previous models of the brand, based on black for the background, and gray for the lateral details. This front shell doesn't feature any lighting, and perhaps it would have been the icing on the cake and a way to differentiate itself from its younger sisters.
The graphics card itself is quite compact, giving us the feeling of being very narrow due to its considerable thickness. We have measurements of 286.5 mm long, 100 mm wide and 50.2 mm thick. Yes, it is longer than the reference model, but not much, always being below 30 cm to be compatible with almost any chassis on the market. Similarly, this GPU is very narrow, and when it comes to thickness, 2.5 occupied slots is not too much, so it can be placed in a vertical configuration if the chassis supports it.
And speaking more about the sides of this Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC, we do have lighting in the external area in this case, which is visible to the user. It consists of a panel of LEDs in the inscription " GIGABYTE " that has RGB Fusion 2.0 technology, so we can customize it in effects and colors from the corresponding software.
Note that both sides are practically identical, except for the logo. In addition, the heatsink is quite exposed, something that is basic so that the air introduced by the fans can leave without hindrance. In fact, on the inside it could have been opened even more, totally, and you can't see it.
And how could it be otherwise, we must talk in more detail about the heatsink that we have mounted. It is Gigabyte's highest performance, its well-known WINDFORCE 3X, with an evident configuration of three fans that generate an air flow perpendicular to the heatsink. These fans with all three exactly the same, with a diameter of 82 mm and a unique design in its 11 blades to generate the maximum air flow at the lowest possible noise. And the truth is that when it is running it is not heard, unless we turn it to the maximum.
Perhaps one of the most interesting features of this heatsink is that it has 3D Active Fan technology. That basically is about keeping the system completely idle while the GPU temperature does not exceed a certain threshold, which will normally be 60 ° C. In the same way, this system is customizable in the RPM profile of your fans. These three fans have an alternate operation, that is, they rotate some in the opposite direction to those on their side, so that the air flow does not create turbulent currents, and the truth is that it shows, both in efficiency and in less noise.
One of the things that still has this heatsink is that the three fans are connected to a single head, so, for software purposes, we are controlling all three at the same time. It would be more interesting and useful to be able to control all three independently, so that the user or the system turns off a certain number depending on the needs.
We only need to see the upper backplate, which will be in view of the user if you place the GPU in the traditional way. It is entirely made of aluminum and curiously, it does not have any opening that allows the rear of the component PCB to breathe. It has a fairly simple design, with only the brand's distinctive white color imprinted on it. Know that we will need to remove all the screws in this area in order to remove the heatsink from the card, for a total of 7.
Ports and power connections
Next, we will see everything that concerns the connectivity of the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC, both for monitors and for MultiGPU. And we already anticipate that we will have absolutely no news regarding the reference RTX 2080 model, so the rear ports are:
- 3x DisplayPort 1.41x HDMI 2.0b1x USB Type-C VirtualLink
We are grateful to Gigabyte for maintaining all of this connectivity, including USB-C that other manufacturers take away. As on other occasions, the three DisplayPort ports support a maximum resolution of 8K at 60 FPS, while the HDMI port supports 4K resolutions at 60 FP S. Version 2.0b allows greater compatibility with HDR content to the latest monitors. generation.
The next connectors that we find are the NVLink port to connect two GPUs that are exactly the same and that work in parallel. This port is the SLI upgrade, and it supports much higher resource bandwidth between both GPUs. The second will be the main one, the PCIe 3.0 x16 connector necessary to integrate the card into our equipment. Nvidia has not chosen to place a PCIe 4.0 like the one that supports AMD X570 boards, but it is not necessary either, since with 3.0 we are more than enough.
And we end with the power input, which is made up of a double 8 + 6-pin connector, exactly the same as the one used in the reference model. This is because we have the same TDP of 250W, 35W more than what the normal RTX 2080 had.
Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC PCB and Hardware
We already saw practically the entire data sheet of this new GPU in the review of the reference model, which you have surely seen. For this reason we are going to stop a little more in the details of the heatsink and list the changes made by Gigabyte and its basic characteristics.
Starting with its WINDFORCE 3X heatsink, it is not just a pretty name that Gigabyte has chosen, this heatsink is the highest performance that the manufacturer has built. It is a configuration made up of three blocks made of aluminum with a dense vertical fin on all of them.
The central block is the thickest of the three, because it is responsible for capturing the heat from the SoC of this GPU. It does this through 6 copper heatpipes that make direct contact with the chip through thermal paste. These heat pipes are quite well polished to make them as smooth as possible and to capture heat. This block also has a metal plate that is responsible for attaching the heatsink assembly to the PCB and backplate. The heatpipes are composed of a double layer of copper and a condensed fluid has been placed in between to improve heat transfer.
Well, the 6 heatpipes are directed to the two remaining heatsinks in order to increase the surface of heat exchange with the air, and giving it that great performance that it always has. But it is not all, because we have enough silicone thermal pads that will also capture the heat of the memory chips and especially of the powerful VRM of the card. In fact, we have heatsinks on MOSFETS, CHOKES, and capacitors, the entire complete set.
Now it is time to take a closer look at the hardware of this Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC with all the PCB exposed. And as always, it is a custom one where the VRM has been increased to a total of 8 + 2 power phases with high-quality MOSFETS with Ultra Durable Gigabyte technology, solid capacitors and metal choke to withstand higher temperatures and overclocking.
The chipset it assembles is the 12nm TU104 FinFET, which is capable of reaching a frequency of 1650 MHz in base mode and 1845 MHz in turbo mode since they are 30 MHz more than the reference version. Now we have 3072 CUDA Cores, 384 Tensor Cores and 48 RT Cores, with which we can reach 192 Texture Units (TMUs) and 64 Raster Units (ROPs).
On the part of the GDDR6 memory, the 8 GB and its 256-bit bus have been maintained. And if 14 Gbps seemed enough to you, in this model we have even more, since its clock frequency has been increased to 7751 MHz, thus achieving speeds of 15.5 Gbps from stock and a bandwidth of 496 GB / s. We hope that the brutal features of the reference RTX 2080 are replicated and improved on this Gitgabyte GPU, in addition we will be able to do our bit with an overclocking that will take it to the limit of stability. Beyond is just the infinite universe of Windows blue death screen.

All the synthetic tests and tests have been carried out with the filters as they come in the configuration of each program. The tests consist of tests that run in various resolutions, such as Full HD and 4K, and also to test performance in Ray Tracing in the case of the Port Royal test. We have run all of them on the Windows 10 Pro operating system in its 1903 version with the latest version drivers available for this graphics card. Nvidia has provided us with new ones before they are released for sale, which are version 431.56.
What are we looking for in these tests?
First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To slightly differentiate the quality, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS based on the quantity we get in each game and resolution.
FRAMES PER SECOND | |
Frames Per Second (FPS) | Gameplay |
Less than 30 FPS | Limited |
30 ~ 40 FPS | Playable |

Greater than 60 FPS | Fairly Good or Excellent |
Benchmarks and synthetic tests
- 3DMark Fire Strike normal3DMark Fire Strike UltraTime SpyPort Royal (RT) VRMARK Orange Room
As we see, the results are generally slightly higher than the reference model, something that is normal because we have a slight increase in the frequency of the GPU, but also an improvement in the VRM of the card that contributes to good insurance. better nutrition.
Game testing
After synthetic tests, we will proceed to evaluate the real performance in games, thus having a closer guide of what our GPU will be able to deliver under DirectX 11, 12 and OPEN GL.
The tests will be carried out at the three most used resolutions in gaming, we refer to Full HD (1920 x 1080p), QHD or 2K (2560 x 1440p) and UHD or 4K (3840 x 2160p). In this way, we will have a complete range of results to be able to compare them with other GPUs. For each of the games, we have kept the automatic settings selected in each one and for each resolution so that we can buy it with the rest of the GPU that we have analyzed.
- Shadow of the Tomb Rider, Alto, TAA + Anisotropic x4, DirectX 12 (with and without DLSS) Far Cry 5, Alto, TAA, DirectX 12 DOOM, Ultra, TAA, Open GL 4.5 Final Fantasy XV, standard, TAA, DirectX 12 Deus EX Mankind Divided, High, Anisotropic x4, DirectX 11 Metro Exodus, High, Anisotropic x16, DirectX 12 (with and without RT)
The benchmark results are reinforced by having a GPU at the head of almost all registers with the sole competition of its sister, the reference model. Only rarely has a model like the RT 5700 XT matched this GPU, such as the 1080p Tomb Rider or the RTX 2070 in DOOM. Nothing to question the superiority it shows.
In fact, we've also done DOOM testing with the Vulkan API in case anyone would be surprised to see the Radeons on top of it. Know that in this API the RTX 2080 gives us values of 200 FPS in 1080p and 2K resolution, and 178 FPS in 4K, almost nothing friends. In this way it is quite clear to us that a user who buys this card is to use it mainly in 2K and 4K resolutions in campaign mode, for example, or 1080p at maximum FPS in e-Sports.
Performance with DLSS and RT enabled
As in the other occasions, we have chosen to see how the performance of Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC will be with RTX options activated. Specifically DLSS in Shadow of the Tomb Rider and DLSS + RT IN Metro Exodus in high quality. Two of the games that we have tried the most to have a reference with the rest of the GPU.
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) | 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) | 3840 x 2160 (4K)
Metro Exodus (without RTX) | 98 FPS | 75 FPS | 46 FPS |
Exodus meter (with RT + DLSS) | 76 FPS * Without DLSS | 65 FPS | 46 FPS |
Shadow of the Tomb Rider (without RTX) | 132 FPS | 108 FPS | 61 FPS |
Shadow of the Tomb Rider (with DLSS) | 129 FPS | 114 FPS | 78 FPS |
With this it is clear that DLSS is a resource that we must use for high resolution, not 1080p because this is the learning resolution of the GPU for this new generation Antialiasing technique. Ray Tracing for its part is a property that consumes many resources, so DLSS will be essential in its use. Metro Exodus does not support DLSS in 1080p, for that reason the drop in FPS is understandable.
Overclocking
Remember that overclock or manipulation carries a risk, we and any manufacturer are not responsible for improper use, use your head and always do so at your own risk.
Shadow of the Tomb Rider | Stock | @ Overclock
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) | 132 FPS | 134 FPS
2560 x 1440 (WQHD) | 108 FPS | 115 FPS
3840 x 2160 (4K) | 61 FPS | 66 FPS
3DMark Fire Strike | Stock | @ Overclock
Graphics Score | 28, 964 | 30, 857
Physics Score | 25, 248 | 24, 823
Combined | 24, 072 | 25, 329 |
On this occasion, and with this unit that we have analyzed, we have managed to increase the frequency of the GPU by 110 MHz, thus achieving a clock speed of 1955 MHz, with peaks that have reached 2100 MHz, which is not bad. With the excellent performance of the heatsink, we have experienced improvements in FPS with the GDDR6 memories of this GPU increased by up to 1000 MHz. It is true that we can still go higher, but the performance begins to fall, so we have stayed there.
For the rest of the parameters, we have chosen to increase the voltage by around 90 mV and leave the fan profile as it is, and note that the temperatures are really good. When it comes to gaming performance, we have on the one hand 2 improvement FPS in 1080p, 7 FPS in 2K and 5FPS in 4K which are quite high values, so this TU104 can still stretch quite a bit in point entanglement.
Temperature and consumption
In addition to measuring both its temperature with the HWiNFO program by stressing the GPU with FurMark, we have also simultaneously measured the power consumption of the entire equipment. And while we were doing it, we have taken a few thermal captures with the card at full capacity for a long time with an ambient temperature of around 24 ° C.
Understandably, the idle temperature is higher on this GPU than on the reference model, as the fan system remains off. Otherwise, the heatsink does an excellent job, and we haven't even heard the fan noise, because they are so quiet. Let's remember that this GPU supports a maximum of 89 ° C without going into throttling, which is spectacular for a GPU.
Final words and conclusion about Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC
Well here we have another review of GPU Top range made, being in this case one of the new Super generation. This card is very similar in performance to the reference model, but that little extra 30 MHz makes the balance tip towards Gigabyte with a few more FPS.
The WINDFORCE 3X heatsink has done a spectacular job as always. Its three 82mm fans with 3D Active Fan technology is just what this powerful card needed to keep temperatures below 70 ° C almost 100% of the time we are going to use it.
We recommend our guide to the best graphics cards on the market
Even overclocking, the heatsink is excellent. And the truth is that here we must highlight the excellent performance improvement capacity of this card, surpassing the reference model again. We have had peaks of 2100 MHz in the GPU and +1000 MHz extra in the memories, to obtain improvements especially in 2K and 4K of up to 7 FPS.
The entire set is built to perfection, with quality external components, up to 6 copper tubes for the heatsink and an improved 10-phase VRM that increase the possibilities of this Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC.
The great scare will come as always in the price, since this card will go on the market for a price of 794 euros, at least here in Spain. Recall that the reference model is at 749 euros, so the rise is quite tight. In any case, these Super are equal in price to the previous 2080, and increase their performance by about 10%. So as long as the discontinued 2080s do not go down, this model will be the most recommended.
