AMD has already confirmed that new Ryzen Threadripper processors are on the way, but so far they have revealed surprisingly little about the TRX40 motherboards they will use to power it.

Gigabyte leaks four new TRX40 motherboards

For months there have been rumors of a new TRX40 motherboard platform, coming with PCIe 4.0 support and third-generation Ryzen Threadripper processors, but right now AMD hasn't given any hint of the platform's existence.

Fortunately, Gigabyte cannot keep a secret, having revealed four TRX40 series motherboards in the QVL list of its Aorus Gen4 AIC adapter card. These motherboards include the AORUS XTREME, AORUS MASTER, AORUS PRO WIFI and TRX40 Designare. This information was first discovered by @momomo_us on Twitter.

Recent rumors have also speculated that AMD's Ryzen Threadripper 3000 processors will not be compatible with older X399 series motherboards, with official support only for newer TRX40 series motherboards. The reverse is also said to apply as TRX40 series motherboards are not compatible with 1st and 2nd generation Threadripper processors.

The Gigabyte documentation (Links 1, 2) acts as confirmation that the new socket will be the name of the next Threadripper motherboard platform.

Apparently, AMD has been forced to add a new socket for the third-generation Threadripper due to the increased number of PCIe cores and tracks, making its support in X399 unfeasible. We hope to know more about TRX40 in the coming weeks. We will keep you informed.
