Gigabyte Z390 Designare technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

Gigabyte Z390 Designare is presented to us dressed in gala, with a high-quality cardboard box and a very attractive design. It shows that we are talking about some of the best Gigabyte motherboards if not the best. The box informs us of all its most important characteristics and specifications, so that we have no doubts when it comes to checking out.

We open the box and find everything perfectly protected so that it does not suffer damage during transport, in total we see the following bundle:

  • Gigabyte Z390 Designare motherboard SATA cables Instruction manual and quick guide Installation CD with drivers Wifi antenna Screws Displayport adapter.

It is the latest release from the company for the current Intel mainstream platform, it is a motherboard with full support for the new 8-core Intel Core i9-9900K processors thanks to its Z390 chipset and the LGA 1151 socket. Thanks to this the most demanding users will be able to obtain the maximum performance from their system. GIGABYTE's Ultra Durable technology and exclusive software also add additional value for digital content creators and design professionals.

Before going deeper, for the most curious, we leave you a picture of the back area.

Gigabyte Z390 Designare is built with a jet black AT5 305 x 244mm PCB, and black board armor that looks great. Plus the aesthetics are worthy of a motherboard for design professionals with subtle, unobtrusive LED lighting so design professionals can focus on their artwork.

For an added touch, RGB headers can be used to install the RGB lighting strips and play around with Gigabyte's exclusive Ambient LED app to sync the LED strips with the on-board lighting settings. Gigabyte Z390 Designare is based on the highest quality PCB, with a x2 copper design that guarantees the best durability and reliability.

This Gigabyte Z390 Designare uses a 12 + 1 phase digital VRM design, which includes both the PWM digital controller and the DrMOS. These 100% digital controllers join solid ATX-pin, 8-pin EPS, and 4-pin ATX power connectors to deliver incredible precision in power delivery to the most power-sensitive components on the motherboard, making it that enables enthusiasts to get the most out of the ninth generation of Intel Core processors. All the components of this VRM fall into the Ultra Durable category, which means that they offer the best reliability in their operation.

In addition, Gigabyte Z390 Designare uses a highly efficient heat sink for heat dissipation in the VRM area. The sleekly designed, screw-mounted heatsink does the best job possible when it comes to dissipating heat by pairing its multiple aluminum fins for increased surface area with a Direct Contact Heatpipe.

Beneath the heatsink hides a thicker heating pad, which also helps reduce heat generated by the DrMOS module, keeping temperatures lower for greater efficiency and ensuring that system performance is not affected under heavier workloads. We have 8 + 4 phases that are of excellent quality. We will have no problem overclocking with this motherboard. Although it is focused on the designer than the gamer.

We found six SATA III connectors supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 configurations, and two M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 slots, both passively cooled with the M.2 Thermal Guard heatsink, to prevent overheating and bottlenecks of the SSD in the most intense jobs.

The motherboard is Intel Optane ready and there is also a small M.2 connector to house an Intel CNVi wireless module. All NVMe Intel PCIe SSDs are connected to the PCIe lanes of the CPU to eliminate the bottleneck of the DMI bus. In this way the hot data transmission of the system from the PCIe NVMe SSD RAID0 / 1 to the CPU / DDR for processing is no longer limited.

Gigabyte Z390 Designare offers the best in workstation graphics cards, we found a total of three stainless steel reinforced PCIe 3.0 x16 slots to seamlessly support the most powerful and heaviest cards on the market. This can accommodate up to two Nvidia graphics cards in a two-way SLI configuration or three AMD graphics cards in a three-way CrossFire configuration. It also includes two PCIe 3.0 x1 slots, which will be very useful for mounting expansion cards and further increasing the functionality of this motherboard.

The Gigabyte Z390 Designare comes with two Intel Gigabit Ethernet interfaces with cFosSpeed accelerator, so design professionals can take advantage of better bandwidth prioritization and optimized network performance. The dual LAN design offers additional flexibility for network configurations and improves overall bandwidth. For SOHO networks, one network path can support external work, while another network path can be used for intranet data synchronization as well as data backup.

The dual LAN design also enables design professionals to share data on the same cloud storage devices, while allowing them to simultaneously access cloud servers to load and store project data. This motherboard also has Intel CNVi 802.11ac 160MHz WIFI 2 × 2 technology, in order to enjoy the best network speed without the hassle of cables.

Gigabyte Z390 Designare offers two sets of USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3 to provide a transmission rate of 40 Gbps. Users can daisy chain up to 6 devices in a single connection. Through the motherboard's built-in DP-In design, professionals can transfer image and audio signals from a high-end graphics card and use the Thunderbolt interface to achieve 8K resolution, for more accurate and detailed graphics in their illustrations..

As for the audio, it uses the ALC1220-VB codec from Realtek, the sound engine that we usually see in all high-end motherboards and that gives a very good result. This sound system is manufactured with the best quality Nichicon 12k capacitors, which allow to offer a very crystalline and clean sound together with the independent sections for both channels. It also offers a high impedance headphone amp and virtual 7.1 sound.

Finally, we see the rear panel, which includes the following connections:

  • 1 x PS / 21 keyboard / mouse port x DisplayPort in port 1 x HDMI port 2 x SMA antenna connectors (2T2R) 2 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type A ports (red) 2 x Thunderbolt 3 connectors (USB Type-C ports, Compatible with USB 3.1 Gen 2) 4 x USB 3.1 Gen 12 ports x USB 2.0 / 1.12 ports x RJ-45 ports 1 x Optical S / PDIF out connector 5 x Audio connectors

BIOS

We came across a somewhat classic BIOS by Gigabyte. We are missing a little more design and more intuitive options at this point in the film. Honestly "tarnishes" the performance so good that this motherboard offers for benefits.

We have options to overclock the processor and RAM, adjust voltages as we please, temperature and voltage monitoring, advanced system-wide settings and boot options. Gigabyte has always been characterized by offering a rock stable BIOS and this case is no exception. Good job generally chic @ s!

Overclocking and temperatures

The processor in stock frequency reads 1.28 v instead of the 1.32 v that we saw in the ASRock Z390 Taichi. So you speak pretty well of this Gigabyte Designare? Regarding overclocking, we have reached 5 GHz with a voltage of 1.34v. Perhaps a little high, compared to other motherboards that we have tested in our test bench, but seeing the segment that is addressed, you are forgiven .

We continue with our new temperature test. After 12 hours of prime95 in long duration, we achieved a temperature in the VRM of 70 ºC to 73 ºC on average. There are some spikes, but the ability to refrigerate is very good. We recommend that this test is with the stock speed of the i9-9900k.

Final words and conclusion about Gigabyte Z390 Designare

The Gigabyte Z390 Designare is a motherboard designed for workstations, designers and enthusiastic users. With a sober but not aggressive design, highly durable components, excellent cooling and great connection possibilities are its strongest points.

We have to emphasize the incorporation of a Thunderbolt 3 connector that allows us to connect high-performance storage, external graphics cards and take advantage of the large bandwidth that this connection offers. We also liked that it incorporates a WIfi connection and two Gigabit LAN connections at the connectivity level.

We recommend reading the best motherboards on the market

It can already be bought in online stores and its price is around 299 euros. We think it is a highly recommended choice for enthusiastic and graphic design PC setups. Both for connectivity, benefits and components.
