We are all used to talking about FinFET technology in relation to the manufacturing processes of silicon chips, it is the most advanced technology, although not all products need its benefits. Foundries like GlobalFoundries have a broad portfolio of manufacturing processes to meet the needs of all their clients, one of those processes being the 22FDX.

GlobalFoundries talks about the benefits of its 22FDX process for the IoT

GlobalFoundries claims that its 22FDX manufacturing process can offer a level of performance and energy efficiency similar to that obtained with FinFET technology, but at a lower cost and similar to that of a 28nm planar process. This 22FDX process is i deal to integrate logic and radio frequency components in the same die, since they do not require such advanced technology as FinFET. 22FDX technology starts with a silicon-on-insulating substrate, rather than bulk silicon to offer better performance and adjustable power characteristics for the entire range of GlobalFoundries customers.

22FDX has been the process chosen by companies like Synaptics to manufacture their chips for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. She is joined by other clients such as Rockchip, Riot Micro, Dream Chip, SingularityAIX and many others related in some way to the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence. GlobalFoundries is already working with its next-generation silicon-on-insulator technology, 12FDX, which can offer 15% more performance or 50% less power consumption compared to 22FDX.

Intel is also working on a similar technology dubbed 22FFL to integrate heterogeneous SoCs in the coming years as the IoT sector continues to grow.
