GlobalFoundries recently came out of the race for advanced processors. The company's technology processes with standards of less than 12nm will not be developed, but will focus on improving existing technology processes, including semiconductor production on FD-SOI wafers in Chengdu.

GlobalFoundries and Chengdu realign joint venture strategy

It is obvious that the change in priorities should refer to a series of projects already started by the company, for example, this refers to the armament of a plant under construction in China. Since the introduction of the 7nm process technology was halted, freeing up a significant portion of the capital construction money, GlobalFoundries decided to skip the implementation phase of the 180/130nm process at the factory in China and immediately implement the 22nm process, more precisely 22FDX on FD-SOI boards.

GlobalFoundries signed an amendment to the previously concluded contract with the Chengdu authorities on Thursday. As GlobalFoundries hopes, a powerful infrastructure will emerge around the future company in Chengdu, to support the development and production of semiconductors in FD-SOI wafers. In particular, GlobalFoundries expects an increase in the number of partners in the creation of IP blocks for 22FDX process technology and corresponding design tools (EDA).

The use of substrates with a fully depleted silicon insulation significantly reduces leakage currents, and increases the operating frequencies of transistors, which is equally impossible to achieve in monolithic silicon wafers. This quality is useful for portable electronics, the Internet of Things, 5G devices and for a host of other applications.

As GlobalFoundries claims, it already has over 50 customers for 22FDX process technology with a potential market value of up to $ 2 billion.
