After the arrival of the GeForce GTX 1060, the guys from Digital Foundry have set to work to compare the new Nvidia card with its main rivals in the market, the GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980 and the AMD Radeon RX 480 and R9 390.

GeForce GTX 1060 duels with GTX 970 and GTX 980 and Radeon RX 480 and R9 390

As always Digital Foundry offers us tests at two levels of resolution to better appreciate the performance of each of the cards, so the resolutions used have been Full HD and 2K. It is important to note that the reference models of the GTX 1060 and RX 480 have been used to make the comparison as fair as possible.

Testing at Full HD (1080p)

First of all we have the 1080p tests, which is the resolution that both cards are mainly aimed at and the one most used by gamers. In this resolution, the GeForce GTX 1060 stands out against a Radeon RX 480, which it exceeds in a total of 6 games of 8. If we look at the GeForce GTX 980 we see that it is also capable of outperforming the GTX 1060 in 6 tests so the new card is one notch below, quite small everything is said.

As a summary it can be said that the GTX 1060 is approximately 10% faster than the Radeon RX 480 in Full HD.

2K tests (1440p)

We moved to a 2K resolution in which the new cards defend themselves quite well and which is increasingly used. In this case we see how the GeForce GTX 1060 continues to stay ahead of the Radeon RX 480 in the same 6 games of 8. It seems that the new Polaris architecture doesn't benefit as much from the higher resolution as Hawaii does against its rivals. The GeForce GTX 980 is grown to outperform the GTX 1060 in a total of 7 games.

Overclocking on the GeForce GTX 106

The last test is to overclock the three Nvidia cards and pit them against each other, unfortunately the Radeon RX 480 has not been added in this test. Here it is seen that Maxwell scales better with the overclock than Pascal and the GeForce GTX 980 to lead in 7/8 games at 1080p.

conclusion

Once again it is shown that the GeForce GTX 1060 has come stomping to become the new queen of the mid-range, the Nvidia card has proven superior to the Radeon RX 480 confirming that it is a better option today.

We know that DirectX 12 and Vulkan are better for AMD so the RX 480 could take advantage in the future, something that nobody is sure will happen. Currently the stock of the GeForce GTX 1060 is very small but can be found for sale from 280 euros, a price very similar to the Radeon RX 480 8 GB.
