Today we have an interesting comparison of the recent NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti against the popular GTX 1060, the graphics card that it is supposedly replacing with this new series. The performance comparison was made by the people of Anandtech with revealing results, all in favor of the latest NVIDIA proposal for the mid-range segment.

Comparison of gaming performance of the GTX 1660 Ti vs GTX 1060

Testing equipment

CPU Intel Core i7-7820X @ 4.3GHz
Base plate Gigabyte X299 AORUS Gaming 7 (F9g)
PSU Corsair AX860i
Storage OCZ Toshiba RD400 (1TB)
Memory G.Skill TridentZ

Graphics Cards EVGA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti XC Black

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti

Drivers NVIDIA Release 418.91

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition 19.2.2

SW Windows 10 x64 Pro (1803)

Specter and Meltdown Patched

For the test an EVGA GTX 1660 Ti XC Black was used together with the GTX 1060 in its reference model. The equipment is powerful enough not to make any kind of a 'bottleneck'.

BATTLEFIELD 1

1080p - Ultra - FPS 1440p - Ultra - FPS
GTX 1660 Ti 116 85
GTX 1060 86 62

The first game in the comparison is Battlefield 1 they work in Ultra quality with support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The game shows the superiority of the 1660 Ti, being able to play this game in 1440p and 60 fps without many drawbacks.

FAR CRY 5

1080p - Ultra - FPS 1440p - Ultra - FPS
GTX 1660 Ti 93 67
GTX 1060 70 48

This test was performed without HD textures enabled, an option that was recently applied. With the 1660 Ti the game can be enjoyed with a frame rate of 60 fps at 1440p and Ultra quality, the GTX 1060 unfortunately cannot maintain that frame rate.

WOLFENSTEIN II

1080p - Mein Leben! - FPS 1440p - Mein Leben! - FPS
GTX 1660 Ti 134 89
GTX 1060 82 58

Another game with which we can play 1440p and 60 fps with the new NVIDIA graphics card, and it is also the test where there is a greater difference in performance between the two cards.

FINAL FANTASY XV

1080p - Ultra - FPS 1440p - Ultra- FPS
GTX 1660 Ti 74 51
GTX 1060 53 37

Another favorite for performance testing, Final Fantasy XV is demanding in Ultra quality. The GTX 1660 Ti achieves a frame rate of 74 fps in 1080p, but it does not in 1440p. The GTX 1060 does not achieve either of the two goals, lagging far behind in the comparative results.

GTA V

1080p - Very High - FPS 1440p - Very High - FPS
GTX 1660 Ti 93 66
GTX 1060 76 fifty

Grand Theft Auto V shows more of the same as the other comparatives in Very High quality. The only one that manages to maintain 60 fps at both resolutions is the new 1660 Ti.

SHADOW WAR

1080p - Ultra - FPS 1440p Ultra - FPS
GTX 1660 Ti 79 54
GTX 1060 56 38

Using the new LithTech Firebird engine, Shadow of War enhances detail and complexity, and with free high-resolution texture packs, it is offered as a good example of how to get the most out of both graphics. The difference remains in terms of performance, but the 1660 Ti cannot reach constant 60 fps at 1440p

CONSUMPTION

Consumption
GTX 1660 Ti 278
GTX 1060 257

At a consumption level, both exceed 250 W of power in full operation, in this case, we see the consumption that they have with the Battlefield 1 game applies to any other video game practically.

Conclusions

The results are very favorable to the GTX 1660 Ti, NVIDIA seems to have done a very good job with this graph in terms of performance and consumption. If we look at the figures, the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti offers a performance 37% higher than the GTX 1060 from 6 GB to 1440p, and a very similar gain of 36% in 1080p resolution.

Power consumption in full operation reaches 278 W with a video game, with the GTX 1060 that consumption reaches 257 W. With a consumption quite similar between the two, the new NVIDIA option achieves a performance gain of more than 35 %, nothing bad.

If we look at the prices currently, this graphics card is costing about 100 euros more than the GTX 1060 or even a greater difference depending on the model (there is a GTX 1060 AMP from ZOTAC for 189.90 euros) , so this graphic seems to have been born to replace to the GTX 1070 in that price-performance range. What do you think?
