Hitachi has announced the launch of the first HDD with a storage capacity of 10TB, almost nothing. The new 10TB Ultrastar He10 HGST is based on HelioSeal technology, which uses helium instead of air inside, to run a total of eight plates at a rotational speed of 7, 200 RPM. With this, they manage to offer 25% more capacity than an 8 TB HDD, consuming 43% less energy than air-based HDDs.
The HGST Ultrastar He10 will be available with SATA III 6 Gb / s and SAS 12 Gbps interfaces offering read and write rates of up to 249/225 MB / s. It includes technologies like Secure Erase, Self-Encrypting / TCG Drives, and RAID Rebuild Assist mode to improve performance and security.
Its specifications are completed with a 256 MB cache, an access time of 4.16 ms, a response time of 8 ms and a power consumption of 5 W at idle and 6.8 W at full performance.
It will come with a 5-year warranty and a lifetime before failure of at least 2.5 million hours. Its price has not been announced but it should be higher than the 550 dollars that its 8 TB model costs.
