HP Specter X360 technical features and specifications

Unboxing of HP Specter X360

The presentation of the HP Specter X360 comes in a box with a matte finish that combines bluish black and champagne in its color palette. It is austere, disregarding additional information and product images by simply opting for the Specter range name on the cover and the HP logo on the sides.

When we proceed to open the lid we find that the inner back is lined with a black foam padding while inside the HP Specter X360 is presented in a matte cardboard mold of the same color. When we extract it just below we discover a black separator that hides the rest of the included components.

The contents of the box are summarized in:

  • HP Specter X360 Charger and power cord External multi-port socket HP pencil with two spare mines Leatherette case for the HP Specter X360 Documentation and warranty

HP Specter X360 Design

The design of a laptop belonging to the high range of HP is recognizable from the outset by the version of the logo that receives us on the cover, being here the redesign adopted in 2016 that follows lines with a much cleaner and more aesthetic format than the original.

The HP Specter X360 that we bring you for this review has a charcoal black color palette with bluish tints and champagne-toned details, although you can also purchase two additional color variants: one completely white and the other that combines gray and silver.

Finishes

The care given to the aesthetic aspect of the HP Specter X360 makes us start by looking at manufacturing. All external materials, including the base, are made of aluminum with a matte finish. The backs of the laptop as well as the display hinges and bezel surrounding the trackpad offer not only a color change but also a finish since these surfaces are polished to reflect light.

The back edge has the peculiarity of presenting the beveled corners, a detail that is generally carried out on the entire back of both the screen and the base of the mouse. This in general makes us gain a space in which to insert the fingertips to be able to easily lift the computer from the table as well as add a component of aesthetic distinction.

On the right rear hinge we find the name of the HP Specter range printed with fine letters made in sans serif typeface and matte black finish.

On the reverse side, the first thing we can highlight is the presence of two non-slip rubber horizontal bands that guarantee great stability of the HP Specter X360 on any surface. Additionally, a wide strip is visible in the rear area in which the aluminum cover is generously stamped to optimize the air outlet and intake of both heatsinks. On the beveled sides, we also find two more areas with perforations on both sides, this time for the integrated speakers.

screen

We open the HP Specter X360 and at this time we must say that although it can be done with a single finger, the computer tends to rise by continuing the opening gesture after the first 45º, so we will need to hold the base with the other hand to prevent it from move on the table.

The screen that receives us is an AMOLED 13.3 ” model , totally touchless and without a frame that covers the entire surface of the back of the cover. It is a model in which efforts have been made to avoid the reflective effect despite the polished finish of the screen itself, thus avoiding unnecessary flashes as much as possible.

In the upper margin we can find the integrated camera as well as two microphones located on both sides. The presence of the three elements is very discreet since their size is really minimal and they are found on the black bezels that delimit the range of activity of the screen itself. At the base we find a black band that incorporates the HP logo and marks the end of the AMOLED screen glass before giving way to the hinge support.

On the closure system and its relation to the screen, all of it is located at a height slightly lower than a bezel that surrounds the contour of the cover to avoid hitting the keyboard or the surface of the base when closing. This outline is not flexible rubber, but it does show signs of being made of a rigid plastic material to prevent the aluminum sheets from scratching each other.

Keyboard

The keyboard of the HP Specter X360 is a 60% chiclet-style switch model. The distribution of keys and symbols that we are offered in the model that we have received for the review is American, although when you press the keys you will find that the punctuation marks (and of course the Ñ) are where they should be.

As an interesting detail we have that in each of the four corners of the keyboard there are four pill-shaped protrusions that protrude with respect to the surface of the base, remaining above the keyboard. We understand that this is an additional system with which to avoid contact of the screen with the base since the material chosen is here made of non-slip rubber.

The keyboard as a whole is integrated at a slightly lower height than the rest of the base of the HP Specter X360. The aesthetics of the beveled edges seen in the contours of the notebook is reproduced here, continuing lines with inclined planes that give way to the surface on which the keys sit.

The switches protrude slightly from the design but can fully sink when pressed. On the right side we have integrated a row of buttons for functions such as Page up / down, Home, End and Delete, among others. It is also at the bottom where we can find the fingerprint reader accompanied by the 10th generation Intel Core 7 stickers and the integrated Iris Plus graphics. In the upper area, for its part, the silk-screen printing of Bang & Olufsen, the Danish company that presumably has been responsible for providing the speakers of the Specter range, is observable.

Touchpad

The HP Specter X360 touchpad is a one-piece model on its surface. This one is made of matte plastic and its shade of black differs slightly from that present in the aluminum of the cover. Its entire silhouette is bordered by a trim that continues the aesthetic of champagne gold details.

HP Specter X360 ports and connections

The connectivity and ports in the HP Specter X360 is a feature present in the design that has been integrated with some solutions that have been quite interesting to us. Initially, those available are:

  • USB type C (x2) USB type A Jack 3.5 for headphones and micro Micro SSD reader

All USB ports belong to version 3.1, with Thunderbolt type C models. Additionally you will find connectivity via Bluetooth and the external multiport adapter included in the box that has:

  • HDMI USB type A Super Speed USB type A

Commenting on the available buttons, in the left rear corner we have a switch integrated in the bezel for turning the HP Specter X360 on and off, which in turn has a white LED to notify us of the laptop's activity. On the right side, for its part, we have a switch that disables the functions of the camera and microphones completely, something that users with paranoid tendencies (such as a server) are very grateful for.

HP Pen HP Specter X360

Regarding the Pen included with the HP Specter X360, it is a model that almost goes through a conventional marker pen. Its design is plastic with a matte black color and it has a flap on the hood with which to attach it to the lapel of our jacket or internal pocket if we carry it with us.

This pen has two buttons: one in the upper area corresponding to what in a conventional pencil would be the eraser and another in the lower half of the body to interact. Additionally, the false cap can be rotated to make the type C charging port visible. Also in this structure we have a small LED that may appear green, blue or red depending on the function of the pen and the status of its battery.

The HP Pen comes with two spare parts for the pointer in wear situations. Its format does not differ greatly from conventional plastic mines of other models.

Cable and charger

Something that we liked a lot is that the charger included with the HP Specter X360 is a model whose cable is lined with fiber and offers great resistance. Yes we must note that the charger has two independent cable sections. The first, more resistant, is the one that links the 65W transformer to the laptop ending in a USB Type-C port. This first section has a length of about 160cm and is not removable. The second section is a rubberized cable 100cm long to connect the system to the power.

HP Specter X360 internal hardware

It 's time for the exploded view and take a look at the components under the casing of the HP Specter X360. From the outset what you should know is that none of its sections are expandable both in terms of storage and RAM, so you must be very sure that the specifications it presents meet your needs because there is no going back later. However we must tell you that from the outset the benefits it offers do not disappoint, we tell you.

CPU and GPU

The processor model included in the HP Specter X360 is a tenth-generation i7, specifically the i7-1065G7 model with four cores and eight threads at 1.30GHz on a motherboard manufactured by HP with Intel Ice Lake chipset.

Accompanying all this we have an integrated Intel Iris Plus Graphics GPU, being a model with ten nanometer technology and one of the most powerful iGPUs that Intel has today.

Refrigeration system

Continuing with the cooling, here we have two heatpipes that come directly into contact with the processor and have two turbine-type heatsinks located at opposite ends, one to introduce air and the other to expel it.

Disk and RAM storage

Next to the space dedicated to the processor and the dissipation system we find the SSD storage, which is this time a 1TB capacity model. Also in this area and covered by the trims we have a 16GB RAM memory slot.

As a closing note that the battery appears to occupy 50% of the internal space of the HP Specter X360, being guarded on both sides by the integrated speakers.

Putting the HP Specter X360 into use

As we noted earlier, both storage and memory are not expandable. It is not that the default configuration needs it since it has an excellent capacity for a laptop, especially if we consider that its target audience is not for gaming but rather highly mobile users who require a transportable complement with good qualities for the work and editing programs like Photoshop or Illustrator.

The perception of color and brightness is the usual on an AMOLED screen, maintaining a fairly good viewing angle both vertically and horizontally. Without a doubt, the image quality is excellent, especially if we remember that we have a resolution of 3840 x 2160px on a screen of only 13.3 inches. This gives us a very high pixel density per inch that guarantees a sharpness worthy of the most demanding users.

The flexibility of the HP Specter X360 is undoubtedly its most versatile facet, allowing a full 360º rotation with smooth hinges capable of maintaining a static position with partial opening. The Windows Home software itself is prepared to detect the tablet mode and thus automatically cancel the keyboard functions when it is rotated, thus avoiding unnecessary keystrokes without the need for a lock.

The keyboard operation is generally correct, achieving gentle keystrokes that detect pressure even if we do it at the edges. However, we are somewhat less convinced by the separation that we find between each key, something that until we have become accustomed has caused us to lose some agility when typing as it is slightly wider than usual.

The sensitivity and multi-touch capacity of the touch screen is more than welcome, being undoubtedly one of its main points of interest considering that we understand this premium product as a convertible ready to ride between two worlds: notebook and tablet.

Integrated camera, microphones and speakers

The camera of the HP Specter X360 does not offer us anything surprising, especially when compared to the attention to both the finishes and the rest of the components of this laptop, it seems to pale.

Its technical characteristics presented by the megapixel camera, aspect ratio and resolution for photography are:

  • 16: 9 to 1280 x 720px with 0.9MP 16: 9 to 640 x 360px with 0.2MP 4: 3 to 320 x 240px with 0.3MP 4: 3 to 320 x 240px with 0.08MP 11: 9 to 352 x 288px with 0.1MP 11: 9 to 176 x 144px with 0.03MP

On the other hand, for video recording we have a homogeneous speed of 30fps for all its qualities, in which 720px is the maximum percentage. Additionally we have the default software in Windows with a flicker reduction option that we can configure at 50Hz or 60Hz.

Screen qualities

AMOLED screens usually have excellent qualities in terms of brightness, color and contrast. In this section we are going to take a look at the percentages of the chromatic range, Delta E, lumens and other technical characteristics to assess the quality of the color. For this we are going to use the DisplayCAL and HCFR software as well as a colorimeter with which to calibrate the screen to its optimal conditions.

Values before calibration:

Initially we start with HCFR and do a first test to observe the input values:

  • Light response: Initially it is slightly above average, although it is not an exaggerated deviation. The intensity of the lumens also guarantees us a more comfortable reading in open environments with a large amount of daylight. Gamma: the percentage of gamma remains below the average of 2.2, ranging between 1.9 and 2 points. It is not a significant amount for an uncalibrated screen and falls within the parameters that we can consider ideal. Gray scale: ranges from 0 to just over 2%, which is a minimum deviation band. Color temperature: in general it remains above the mid-white point (6500K) but not exceeding 7000K. We will then perceive a color range

In the pre -calibration stage, when we make a first RGB measurement, we appreciate that green is the only one of the three colors that exceeds the percentage of white point by 6500K, with blue and red remaining slightly below.

HP Specter X360 optimal performance and calibration

Having seen the above, it is time to pass the DisplayCAL and obtain more accurate data. The first factor of interest is the percentage of color coverage and gamut volume present on the screen of the HP Specter X360.

The results are the most complete we have obtained on a portable screen, highlighting a coverage of sRGB of 100%, DCI P3 of 99.5% and Adobe RGB with 96.2%. This ratio increases slightly with the maximum range volume, which in all three cases exceeds these parameters.

Comparison before and after calibration with colorimeter

Comparing the percentages before and after the monitor calibration is when we can really appreciate what key elements have been optimized. To start with, the Delta E (ΔE) decreases from 4.66 to 1.93, which makes it fall within the ideal range (from 0 to 2) and the contrast result obtained is Infinity: 1, which means that the percentage is higher of what the system can reflect and is therefore very high (remember that the ideal starts from 1000: 1). The lumen percentage is in turn 433.4 cd / m² and the final white point is set at 6532K.

The brightness and RGB dimming deviates slightly after calibration and tends to have wider fluctuations compared to the gray level, although this is a difference that is noticeable on paper but is imperceptible on screen.

Finally, we have passed the colorimeter through several fractions of the screen to compare the color quality in each of its sections. In most cases it falls within the mean, finding only a reasonable decompensation in the lower left corner. This is not an issue that we can alter with the colorimeter since it depends exclusively on the manufacture of the panel itself.

HP stylus and touch sensitivity

Commented aspects regarding the functionality of the HP Specter X360 it is also time to address the question of the Pen included in the batch beyond its characteristics as a finish. The pen has the ability to be captured by the screen without having to activate the pairing via Bluetooth, but if we want to see a white cursor that tracks its position on the screen, we must do so.

Within the characteristics of pencil and Windows ink of the operating system we can see the options of the pen and modify them to our liking. Here we find certain limitations as to what we can set the top button to do, but the most interesting is undoubtedly the opening assignment of a program. This can be chosen from a predefined list or searched within the browser until reaching the.exe startup file. At the same time we have options to set actions for long press or double click.

Regarding the use of the HP pen in illustration and design environments, in general it seems to us a tool to get out of trouble or carry out more casual actions than editing itself. The display does not demonstrate reacting to different pressure intensities, making a modulated line trace impossible. You may also encounter difficulties if you slide the pen too smoothly through it and this in turn continues to be detected at a maximum distance of approximately one centimeter.

What we mean by this is that the HP Specter X360 stylus is not a substitute for a design station laptop with a graphics tablet, but it can be used for quick tweaks and tweaks that require little precision. Its ideal function is oriented to presentations or annotations on jobs and this is when the functions assignable to its secondary buttons make sense.

Performance tests for HP Specter X360

It's time to comment on the results after running several performance analysis programs for the HP Specter X360 CPU and GPU. The tests carried out have been:

  • Crystal Disk Mark - CineBench 15 Read / Write Speed Analysis - Full and Single Thread CPU Performance CineBench 20 - Complete and Single Thread CPU Performance 3DMark - Analysis with TimeSpy, Fire Strike and Fire Strike Ultra

SSD storage performance

Starting with the read and write results of the SSD we must say that in general they present a very good performance with quite high maximum percentages. A ceiling reading of 3300.30 MB / s and writing of 2395.34 MB / s are very good figures to work with.

CPU and GPU performance

An initial Open GL test on Cinebench R15 reveals an average 65.68fps percentage in stressful situations. Here we can already see the signs that this is not a gaming laptop or video editing, so that although the characteristics of its components are correct, the performance for these tasks is not comparable to models that are prepared for this purpose.

Starting with the CPU, its single-threaded performance is acceptable, but we can see that overall it falls below other high-end models. It is convenient to keep in mind that its performance as a 13-inch notebook is more than satisfactory and here we are comparing it even with gaming laptops, so the multi-core results are not as low as it may seem.

It is clear from the tests directed at the GPU that this is not a laptop that we can ask for renderings or activities with a high graphic requirement. The results in this department are quite low and it is here where the concept that this is a laptop for work or day-to-day activities that is more committed to versatility and portability is confirmed.

Battery and autonomy

The HP Specter X360 battery is made of lithium polymer and has a capacity of 58Wh. Inside we find a subdivision of four cells with 15.2V voltage capable of fast charging and low power consumption. From the outset, this guarantees a life cycle of more than 500 full charges.

What do these numbers translate into? Well, broadly speaking, the autonomy that we can expect from the HP Specter X360 is quite high, and can last up to 22 hours in Energy Saving mode. With Balanced performance we can wait for about ten or twelve hours and if we opt for High Performance we will probably limit ourselves to about five hours.

All this also depends in turn on the type of activity and program being executed, so the figures are only approximate based on our experience of use.

Temperatures

Closing the category of analysis and performance test we bring you the results of the temperatures in the HP Specter X360. We must tell you that in general it is a laptop that is kept at fairly low temperatures by carrying out ordinary activities such as playing videos on YouTube, writing documents or opening a gallery simultaneously. This indicates that in general the dissipation has a very good performance and in fact we can say that it remains inaudible in almost any circumstance.

Temperatures brighten a bit when we go into somewhat more demanding activities like editing large files in Photoshop, but even here the average doesn't rise above about 40 or 50 degrees. It is when we perform the stress tests when we can see that the maximum temperature can reach 74º, a percentage that although slightly higher does not overheat the surface of the HP Specter X360 although we can still hear the activity of the heatsinks.

We must say that in general the thermal results are very satisfactory. Keep in mind that the generous number of openings in the bottom of the notebook makes it easy to expel heat and makes the work of the fans much quieter by needing less revolutions to maintain a constant temperature.

Final words and conclusions about HP Specter X360

The HP Specter X360 is a functional laptop prepared for both work, study or leisure. Although it is not a laptop prepared for gaming, there is nothing that prevents us from carrying out activities with programs from the Adobe package, although it is true that video editing may need some push. The fact that its components are not expandable leads us to recommend you evaluate well what you need from a laptop before deciding to buy.

If what you are looking for is an all-terrain notebook that is up to a demanding use in which you are looking for good connectivity and versatility, without a doubt the HP Specter X360 is a model that you can value for such a function. The functions and programs that we can use on a laptop can become more numerous and precise than on a tablet, thus also avoiding the need to carry an external keyboard with you.

We recommend reading:

The screen itself presents a high resolution with unbeatable color qualities, the sound of the speakers is very satisfactory and the tactile capacity of the panel together with its conversion into a tablet make the HP Specter X360 a laptop worth considering.

The starting price of this model starts from about € 1, 500 with a Full HD screen. It is a budget that we usually see in high-end computers, so here we do not find any surprises. It is true that the HP Specter X360 is a smaller computer with its 13 ”, but we also have 360º rotation and quality accessories. Although, how do you see it? Is your budget up to par? Tell us your opinion in the comments.
