Hynix already manufactures 8 ghz gddr5 memory
The memory for graphics cards has been stagnant in GDDR5 for a few years and although for next year AMD is expected to make the jump to HBM, we see that the current GDDR5 can still give a little more performance now that it seems that its substitutes.
SK Hynix has announced that they are already mass-producing GDDR5 memory chips at an effective frequency of 8GHz and that they are now available for graphics card manufacturers to start using in their models. Probably the first graphics cards to mount them are the ones equipped with the future high-performance GPU Nvidia GM200, better known as Big Maxwell.
It is also possible that these new chips are used in GeForce GTX 980 with custom design to increase their performance, the use of these new chips would increase the bandwidth by 14.2%, going from 224 GB / s to 256 GB / s.
For its part, AMD does not have the need to use GDDR5 memory at such a high frequency because it uses a 512-bit interface on its cards more powerful than the Hawaii GPU. Recall that the next generation Radeon R300 series will mount HBM memories that offer much higher bandwidth than the GDDR5.

Hynix manufactures 16gb ddr4 chips, will allow dimms up to 256gb
Sk Hynix has added to its product catalog the new 16 GB DDR4 memory chips, which should allow the maximum memory capacity per DIMM to be doubled. This allows SK Hynix to sell chips of the same capacity with fewer memory semiconductor arrays.
