The miniaturization of computer components continues to advance without stopping, thanks to which we can enjoy ever smaller equipment, and with power that was unthinkable a few years ago. Now IBM has gone a step further, creating the first computer smaller than a grain of salt.

The IBM computer is smaller than a grain of salt and has all the power of a 1990 x86

It was at the IBM Think 2018 conference, where the company announced the smallest computer in the world, its size is less than a grain of salt, so we can already get an idea of the feat. Despite its small size, this computer has the same power as a 1990 X86 processor, we can think that it is little, but let's not lose sight of the detail of its minuscule size.

This small computer also stands out for being very cheap, since its production only requires a few pennies on the dollar and a few hundred transistors, something insignificant compared to the billions of transistors that today's processors have.

This new IBM-created computer will be a data source for blockchain applications. Their goal is to help track product shipments and detect theft, fraud, and non-compliance. You can also perform basic AI tasks, such as ordering the data to be provided.

IBM affirms that this is only the beginning, because over the next five years the miniaturization in computing will not stop advancing, which will make us have small devices like this one integrated into all everyday objects.
