The new European data protection law came into force last Friday and little by little we are learning about its effects. Since technology companies are adapting to it, which means the arrival of the first actions. Twitter is one of the companies that is taking action. In their case, they are blocking users who were under the age of 13 when their account was created.

Part of the law assumes that web pages and applications have to ensure that minors do not have access or accounts on them. Therefore, the social network begins with this blocking of accounts, thus complying with the law.

Users who experience this receive a message from the company saying that they are being blocked for this reason. In it , the consent of the parents is required to continue using this account. If not, the account will be removed from Twitter entirely. A problem for users who are currently of legal age, but created an account when they were teenagers.

As of now, 13 years is the minimum age established to be able to open an account on the popular social network. Although many young people open accounts with false birth dates, making it an average that doesn't really promise to have too much effect in practice.
