IDC said on Monday that global sales of PCs and gaming monitors increased 16.5% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2019. The research company attributed that increase to several factors, but perhaps the most important was the increase in the availability of Intel CPUs, which made it easier for manufacturers to meet demand.

IDC claims that sales of gaming PCs and laptops have risen in 2019

IDC commented that a 'gaming' PC includes “mid and high end Nvidia and AMD” graphics cards, but not professional GPUs such as Quadro and Radeon Pro. A 'gaming' monitor is any product with a refresh rate of 100 Hz or higher. Making clear what are the definitions 'gaming' for IDC.

IDC said that sales of gaming notebooks increased 12.7% year-over-year, and attributed part of that growth to the "launch of models that support 'Ray Tracing' across a broad spectrum of price points." The category is expected to "continue to have the bulk of volume and revenue, with the form factor seeing strong innovations in slimmer dimensions and performance." These improvements could reduce the performance difference between desktop computers and gaming laptops.

On the other hand, sales of gaming products on the desktop rose 3.3% in the second quarter of 2019 after struggling for several consecutive quarters. This growth was attributed to "improving the supply of Intel CPUs, reducing excessive GPU inventory, and renewing the pricing structure for Ray Tracing-capable GPUs." IDC also said fears about price increases resulting from the US trade war. and China also led to an increase in device shipments in the US.
