AMD Ryzen Threadripper is a really big processor, it is a multi-chip design that integrates two “Summit Ridge” dies with eight cores each. It also stands out for being the first AMD processor to bet on the land-grid array (LGA) design, which means that the pins are on the motherboard and not on the processor.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper works with the new SP3r2 socket so it is not compatible with AM4 motherboards, in fact the socket is much bigger with a total of 4, 094 pins, which is about twice the contacts of the AM4 platform. This new socket is also known as TR4.

The image on the bottom of the AMD Ryzen Threadripper shows us that the pins are divided into two regions, each of which corresponds to one of the 8 core dies that is hidden inside the chip. Many years ago, a similar design had not been seen by AMD, since since the Athlon64 FX 72 the LGA design had been reserved for processors in the business sector.

The arrival of Threadripper is expected on July 27, we remind you that the current heatsinks will not be compatible unless the manufacturers provide adapters for this new platform. Noctua has been the first to show its new prototypes.
