Innodisk released a 4K-capable M.2 format graphics card late last month, and according to a report by PC Watch Japan , the component is already available. The market for this product is the industrial embedded cards sector, so it is not a powerful GPU in an M.2 format card, but it is an interesting concept that could one day lead to laptops simple upgradeable graphics cards, for example.

Innodisk uses an SM768 graphics chip in M.2 format

Innodisk states in its press release that M.2 graphics cards are one of the fastest growing segments of today's small format graphics cards. Your new card can be equipped with ports to connect to different devices using an integrated HDMI v1.4 transmitter, or LVDS and DVI-D signals. The new Innodisk card in 2280 format is compatible with Windows and Linux.

Elsewhere in the press release, we are told that Innodisk's ultra-slim 4K M.2 graphics card is built to withstand industrial-grade shock and vibration, and can operate in temperatures ranging from -40 to 85 degrees Celsius. These 4K display cards are expected to be used in the automation, retail, and medical markets for space-saving solutions.

This new product uses the SM768 chip. This is a 2D throttle and capable of a maximum resolution of 3840 × 2160 @ 30Hz, the lowest resolutions from 1440p down support a 60Hz refresh. The GPU comes with optional 256MB DDR3 memory, but it can be connected with up to 1GB of memory. HW decoding of H.264 MVC / AVS +, H.263, MPEG-4, MPEG2, M-JPEG, RealVideo, VC-1 and Theora video formats is supported. The SM768 also has four internal USB 2.0 Host / Hub ports for connecting peripherals such as keyboard and mouse.

This seems to be a very interesting concept, especially for laptops, so we may see it more often in the coming years.
