Intel Amber Lake sounds like a new generation of very low power processors from Intel. These new chips will come under the Y series, as well as based on the semiconductor giant's 14nm Tri-Gate manufacturing process.

Intel Amber Lake, the new low-power premium platform from the semiconductor giant

For now, there are three Intel Amber Lake processors, all with a configuration of two physical cores and a TDP of just 5W, something that would put them quite close to the energy efficiency that the most powerful ARM processors are capable of achieving. Its common features continue with a 4MB L3 cache and an integrated Intel HD 615 GPU. These processors will reach quite low frequencies, although they will have a turbo mode so that they offer good overall performance.

We recommend reading our post about MacBook Pro 2018 with Core i9-8950HK it has serious overheating problems

The exceptional balance between performance and power consumption of these processors will make them ideal for use in ultra laptops, tablets, two-in-one computers and other very compact devices, where energy efficiency is essential. Its arrival on the market could take place later this year.

For now we talk about three models, which we summarize below

  • Intel Core m3-8100Y: 1.1GHz (up to 3.4GHz Turbo Boost) Intel Core i5-8200Y: 1.3GHz (up to 3.9GHz Turbo Boost) Intel Core i5-8500Y: 1.5GHz (up to 4.2GHz Turbo Boost)

We will have to wait a little to know if the arrival of these Intel Amber Lake processors is finally confirmed and what they are capable of doing, because unlike the Gemini Lake, some low cost and low power consumption SoCs, these Intel Amber Lake they are based on a high performance architecture.
