Intel cascade lake will support up to 3.84tb of RAM per socket
Table of contents:
Intel is working on the final touches of its new wave of Xeon Scalable processors based on the new Cascade Lake architecture. These new processors will come with up to 28 cores and a six-channel memory interface, capable of supporting a maximum of 3.84 TB per socket.
Intel Cascade Lake will revolutionize server RAM
The new Intel Cascade Lake processors will come with a six-channel DDR4 memory controller, which will allow up to 18 DDR4 DIMM slots to be mounted on the motherboard, to accommodate a maximum of 3.84 TB of memory per socket. As if that weren't enough, these processors will support the new Optane Persistent Memory technology, which is based on 3D Xpoint memory to offer a high-speed, low-latency, and persistent storage medium.

This memory will act as a RAM, with the advantage that data is not erased when the power goes out, allowing large data centers to quickly reduce nodes in response to load, without wasting several dozen minutes on DRAM repopulation with data from a hibernation image. Optane has always had the objective of unifying the RAM memory and the storage of the system in a single pool, something that is becoming a step closer to being real.
The new Optane-based Persistent DIMMs come in capacities of up to 512 GB. It is simply 512 GB of 3D X-point memory connected to a special controller in the DIMM, which interacts with the standardized DDR4 interface. These new processors promise to be a revolution in the sector of large servers, something that is sorely needed with an AMD that has been going very hard with its EPYC processors based on the Zen architecture.
