Bad news for users who plan to update their Intel Core platforms in the coming year. A couple of slides have come out on upcoming Intel 'Comet Lake' processors suggesting a new motherboard will be required.
Comet Lake processors will come out in 2020 with a new socket
Xfastest received a letter from a reader with slides stating "supposedly" that Comet Lake comes with a design with a maximum of 10 cores and 20 threads, but the number of pins, however, will be LGA 1200, and that is another socket and therefore once again we will have to buy a new motherboard.
The information provided by the anonymous user does not indicate a source, but looking at the slides are quite similar to the previous Intel data files. From one of the images from the Comet Lake-S platform, the processor has up to 10 cores and 20 threads, Wi-Fi 802.11ax, INTEL RST 17, and more. Also, the pin section is LGA 1200, the highest TDP 125W, and mention is made of the Intel 400 chipset.

The reader also has another photo and believes that Comet Lake will be released in the first quarter of 2020, but does not list the detailed model of the processor, nor can it verify or confirm the authenticity of the i9-10900KF model. In any case, the LGA 1151 has been used by Skylake, KabyLake and CoffeeLake for different generations, and the moment to 'retire' this socket was inevitable, anyway, we did not expect it to be so soon.
Take this information with tweezers, since Intel has not yet given information about the existence of a new motherboard platform for next year, but we will be attentive to all the information that comes up.
