Intel core i9 7960x beats amd threadripper without messing up
Table of contents:
The Geekbench score of the upcoming Intel Core i9 7960X has been leaked on the network, showing great performance for this processor that will rival the AMD Threadripper 1950X. Intel's new i9 chips are slated to arrive sometime later this year and will be fully compatible with the X299 platform for Skylake-X.
Results of the 16-core Intel Core i9 7960X in Geekbench
The Geekbench performance of the Intel Core i9-7960X that was leaked a few hours ago appears to be a sample of engineering operating at very low frequencies. Therefore, we understand that the score obtained in Geekbench has been 5238 points in its single-core performance and 33672 performance points with its 16 cores activated and working.
While these numbers would be impressive for any other chip, they are much lower than expected if we talk about a 16-core processor. If we take a look at the scores obtained by the Core i9 7900X (which has 10 cores instead of 16) we will see that its performance is almost similar in almost all categories, except floating point and memory. This would be due to the low frequency at which this chip is operating, only 2.5GHz, a very low speed that misuses the number of cores.
Performance comparison
CPU Name | Intel Core i9-7960X 16 cores @ 2.5 GHz | AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X 16 cores @ 3.4 GHz | Intel Core i9-7900X 10 cores @ 3.3 GHz |
---|---|---|---|
Single Core Performance | 5238 | 4074 | 5390 |
Multi Core Performance | 33672 | 26768 | 33945 |
Single Core: Integer | 5460 | 3933 | 5541 |
Single Core: Floating Point | 5576 | 3869 | 6054 |
Single Core: Memory | 4279 | 4245 | 4107 |
Multi Core: Integer | 34635 | 31567 | 38695 |
Multi Core: Floating Point | 50087 | 34794 | 46700 |
Multi Core: Memory | 6437 | 5206 | 5935 |
MSRP | $ 1699 | $ 999 | $ 999 |
Even when running at a low frequency, it still manages to beat AMD's Threadripper smoothly in virtually every test.
The best processors on the market
The Intel Core i9 7960X, as we discussed, has 16 cores and 32 threads of execution with a total of 22.5MB of L3 cache. Intel intends to sell this processor above $ 1, 600 and its more modest variant, the Intel Core i9-7900X, for about $ 999. In both cases, beating the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X in Geekbench tests.
