Intel has announced the suspension of its Kaby Lake-X processors, which were announced less than a year (11 months ago). The processors were designed for the HEDT platform had 4 cores and were built under a 14nm + architecture, however the poor user response and low sales have led Intel to put it in EOL state.

Intel Core i7-7740X - i5 7640X 'Kaby Lake-X' pass to better life

When Intel announced its X299 platform based on Core-X processors, they made an unusual announcement adding two quad-core chips to the range. The two processors that were part of the Kaby Lake-X range had nothing in common with the Skylake-X processors. They were based on a slightly improved 14nm + node, but provided a lower number of PCIe tracks, 4 cores on a HEDT platform (Core i5 came without multithreading), only had dual channel memory support and did not offer performance gains over the processors that were already present on the LGA 1151 (Z270) platform.

Intel Core i7-7740X had 4 cores and 8 threads, supported dual channel DDR4-2666 memories and only 16 PCIe tracks. The TDP was 112W and its price stood at $ 349.

Intel Core i5-7640X was the other Kaby Lake-X processor that had 4 cores only without multithreading. It was similar to the previous one in that it only supported dual-channel memory and PCIe tracks and its price was $ 242.

While overclockers broke some records due to the better BMI at Kaby Lake-X and the improved 14nm + node, the processors were generally not well received by hardware enthusiasts and therefore saw very poor sales.
