Intel DG1 will be only 23% more powerful than Tiger Lake graphics

Intel's Xe GPUs have captured the imagination of tech enthusiasts everywhere, and virtually all of us can't wait to see these new GPUs in action. But if this rumor is true (and this is the second time we've heard something like this) there may be more than a few setbacks before that dream materializes.

What is interesting about this rumor is that Intel DG1 (Xe) was obviously only going to be a training vehicle for Intel to enter the world of dGPUs, but we have already heard rumors that Intel was not able to get any AIB to produce your own custom models. While this is understandable considering that no AIB would want to be Intel's guinea pig, another potential reason for this rejection has emerged: Intel would not be getting a good TDP for its graphics architecture.

Although the rumor also has other points to consider, including the fact that the team is not able to have good TDP (consumption) values. At this early stage in the development of these GPUs, the goal should be to get a working dGPU - tweaks can wait. The gaming market has already indicated on multiple occasions that TDP is the least of their concerns and frankly a 25W GPU is not something that anyone would seriously buy anyway.

A discrete GPU with 23% more performance than Tiger Lake's would make sense if the price is right. In other words, an extremely low price. We will see how this develops and whether Intel will push its Xe graphics card platform forward next year. We will keep you informed.
