Intel has taken advantage of this year's Computex 2018 to make an incredible demonstration of a 28-core processor operating at a high frequency of 5Ghz, which caused the astonishment of the many journalists who attended the event.

Intel's 5-core 28-core processor was overclocked and cooling capable of dissipating up to 1000W

Gregory Bryant of Intel focused the presentation on talking about the performance benefits of running the processor at 5Ghz, and not having to sacrifice performance on multi-threaded tasks, resulting in a processor that could deliver the best of both worlds. Intel said it will launch an exactly the same processor later this year.

Tom's Hardware media has pointed out that an Intel representative clarified that the company simply forgot to tell the public that it had overclocked that processor, a small detail that can completely change the story. Intel's current 18-core processors consume a lot of power, so it's not hard to imagine that a 28-core monster overclocked at 5 GHz must be quite a power eater.

In order to bring the processor to 5 GHz, Intel has used a very powerful cooling system, so much so that it is able to match the performance of liquid cooling with a capacity of 2500 liters, enough to dissipate up to 1000W of TDP.

There's no way of knowing how much heat that processor was generating, but it doesn't look too good, especially after AMD has announced that second-generation Ryzen Threadrippers will hit 32 cores with a 250W TDP. Intel seems quite desperate to take the lead from AMD.
