The American Intel has made a presentation at its offices in Tel Aviv, Israel where they have delved into the topic of their future Ice Lake and Sunny Cove. These processors will mount good 10nm transistors, compared to the current 14nm ones .

As we have seen in other news, the new Intel processors will offer, on average, an improvement in the CPI of 18% (between 10% and 40%) , but what is the reason for this. Now we will do a little research on the matter.

Intel Ice Lake review

The company has thoroughly revised the circuits in its previous processors, so it has maximized the efficiency of the instructions for each cycle. Also, the size of the L1 and L2 cache has been increased to have more patio to play.

As most relevant changes we will have:

  • 48kB of L1 cache (previously 32kB). 512kB of L2 cache memory (previously 256kB). L2 TLB increases from 1536 to 2048. μOps increase from 1.5K to 2.25K μOps , on average. With this, we can execute around 352 instructions per cycle, instead of 224. In-Flight Loads increase from 72 to 128. In-FLight Stores range from 56 to 72.

As we see, Ice Lake has, in gross numbers, a higher performance than its previous version, so it is normal that it can execute more instructions per cycle. On the other hand, Sunny Cove has also shown some benchmarks where it is seen that a superior power in single-thread.

As we have already written in other news, Ice Lake will be available on laptops later this year, but until the beginning of 2020 we will not have desktop models.

Features of the Intel Ice Lake for notebooks

The portable models will be Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 with:

  • Up to 4 cores and 8 threads. 8MB of cache memory. Frequencies up to 4.1GHz. Support for LP4 / x-3733 or DDR4-3200. Integrated Gen 11 graphics card with a maximum of 64 EU at 1.1GHz frequency.
