Intel Optane 905P is the high-performance version of the SSD storage drive based on Intel's 3D Xpoint memory technology. This time it acts as a storage medium, and not as an intermediate cache as the M.2 versions that we have analyzed so far did.

In this review we will answer the question of whether it is worth acquiring an Intel Optane over a PCI Express SSD. Don't miss our review! Here we go!

Unboxing and design

Intel Optane 905P comes to us in a cardboard box with a design based on bluish tones, it is a very typical presentation of the blue giant.

In the rear area we have all the most important specifications of the product, perfectly detailed in English, obviously, we miss a slight translation in Spanish.

We open the box and find the Intel Optane 905P SSD perfectly packed so that it does not suffer any type of damage during transport. Along with this SSD we find all the documentation, including a quick guide to use and the warranty card.

We already focus our view on the Intel Optane 905P unit, at first glance it is very similar to the SSDs based on NAND memory technology that we can find on the market. It is a PCB that forms a half-height PCI Express card, on the PCB all the components are placed, and on top of them a generous heat sink to prevent the unit from overheating during operation, something essential for it to offer its better performance.

An important difference with the Optane modules that act as cache, is that this Intel Optane 905P uses a PCI Express 3.0 x4 interface instead of the PCI Express 3.0 x2 of said cache units. This will allow the SSD to offer a higher data transfer rate. Optane also makes use of the NVMe protocol, which means it could reach speeds of up to 4, 000 MB / s with this technology.

It is based on 3D XPoint memory technology, which has been jointly developed by Intel and Micron. It is a type of persistent memory capable of offering superior speed to NAND, as well as greater resistance in writing cycles. This type of memory aims to replace NAND-based SSDs , although it will not be in the short term, as it is still in its infancy and should improve long before it becomes the dominant memory in our PCs, if it ever succeeds. This means Optane is much faster at handling QD 1 and QD 2 random data, up to five times faster than NAND based disks.

The manufacturers of NAND SSD drives usually indicate the speeds reached in ideal conditions, when we move away from these ideal conditions, the performance of the NAND memory drops a lot, that's where 3D XPoint and Optane shine, being able to sustain much more performance. elevated in all possible conditions.

Another advantage of Optane is that 3D Xpoint memory is much more resistant than NAND, which makes the disk last much longer. This 960 GB Intel Optane 905P is capable of supporting an amount of written data of 17.52 PB, a figure that NAND memory can't even brush against in your wettest dreams.

Intel Optane 905P includes hardware AES 256 bit data encryption technology, which means that all stored content will be completely secure, and there will be no decline in drive performance during encryption. For its installation we will need to have an NVME M.2 x4 connection and a SATA power to have our Intel Optane fully operational. As we can see in the last image, it uses its own connector for transfer and power.

Final words and conclusion about Intel Optane 905P

The Intel Optane 905P is one of the most powerful storage drives we've tested and uses the NVME M.2 PCI Express connection. Intel wants it to be a substitute for traditional SSDs and hard drives, and not a plug-in. Optane's main advantage is that it has much lower latency than traditional NAND memory and much more sustained transfer speed on all types of workloads.

As we have seen in our tests, the read and write rates are excellent, as many as those of a Samsung 970 PRO or a Corsair MP500. But the integration of the new 3D XPoint memories is a plus, since it is a technology with greater longevity in writing and use.

We would have liked to test this unit by doing a resistance test (for times and especially that it is not our unit and would imply the end of its way), although its durability of 8, 760 TBW does not paint anything bad on paper.

So the Intel Optane 905P is a strong candidate to change your home SSD? This unit is specially geared for servers or some super high-end workstations. We continue to think that it is an ideal candidate to cache databases with a good RAID system or tasks that require a lot of use of your storage disk. In other words, it is not oriented to the consumer sector but to the professional sector.
