Intel released its latest Xeon processors, codenamed Cascade Lake (CSL), earlier this month. However, it appears that the manufacturer Santa Clara did not reveal all of its letters after all. ServeTheHome has learned that Intel is secretly preparing Xeon Gold U processors to compete with AMD EPYC's P series in the single socket market.

Intel Xeon Gold U would arrive to compete with the AMD EPYC P series

Like the other announced Cascade Lake models, the U Series Xeon Gold chips continue to use the Skylake microarchitecture with a 14nm manufacturing process. What sets U-series processors apart from the others is the lack of the Ultra Path Interconnect (UPI) link, and therefore cannot be mixed with other processors of the same type. In other words, Xeon Gold's U series product lines are specifically designed for single socket servers.

First off, we have the Xeon Gold 6212U, a single-socket version of the Xeon Platinum 8260. It shares the same specs as its Platinum counterparts, like the 24-core, 48-wire, 35.75-MB cache and a TDP of 165 W. The chip operates at a base clock speed of 2.4 GHz and reaches 3.9 GHz.

The next piece is the Xeon Gold 6210U, which looks just like the Xeon Gold 6248. The processor has 20 cores, 40 threads, 27.5 MB of cache, and a nominal power of 150 W. The processor runs at a 2.5GHz base clock. and a 3.9GHz 'boost' clock.

Lastly, the Xeon Gold 6209U is based on the Xeon Gold 6230. The chip shares the same number of cores and the same amount of cache as the Xeon Gold 6210U, but it has a 2.1GHz clock, a 3.9GHz boost clock, and a TDP at 125W.

Xeon Gold's U-series processors are expected to cost roughly half that of their counterparts. The Xeon Platinum 8260 costs about $ 4, 702, so the Xeon Gold 6212U should cost around $ 2, 000. In this way, the Xeon Gold 6210U and the Xeon Gold 6209U could cost 1, 500 and $ 1, 000, respectively.
