Intel Skylake X and Kaby Lake X are part of the new semiconductor giant HEDT platform that will arrive to succeed the current X99. The two families will use the X299 chipset and will be announced coinciding with Gamescom in August.
Intel Skylake X and Kaby Lake X: features
Altogether Intel will announce three Skylake X processors with 6, 8 and 10 core configurations for users who need the most powerful, then we will have a Kaby Lake X processor with a quad core configuration and that should not be easy to be an interesting alternative to the i7-7700K, especially due to the high price that motherboards from the HEDT range always have. As always, all HEDT processors arrive with the multiplier unlocked for overclocking and with the IHS soldered to the die for perfect heat transfer, which is why they are the chips preferred by the most demanding users who are looking to push the performance of their equipment to the limit.
The Kaby Lake X model with its four cores will have a TDP of 112W while the Skylake X models with the highest number of cores will have a TDP of 140W. Another limitation of Kaby Lake X is that it will be limited to dual chanel memory configurations while Skylake X will have a quad chanel controller. Another reason to see little sense in the Kaby Lake X above the i7-7700K which will have a very similar configuration.
The new X299 platform will use the new LGA 2066 socket that will be compatible with at least two generations of processors as it has happened in previous generations. The X299 chipset will offer up to 24 PCI-Express 3.0, 10 USB 3.0, 8 USB 2.0, SATA 3.0 and Intel LAN (Jacksonville PHY) tracks. This new platform will have to duel with the highly anticipated AMD Ryzen processors .
