Intel has revealed new information about its next-generation Xe GPUs, which are expected to debut next year on desktop and laptop platforms. The Intel Xe GPU architecture, which is internally referred to as Gen 12, would be the first architecture to be released in graphics card format for the mass public.

During the 2019 Intel Developer Conference 'IDC', held in Tokyo, Intel presented some slides on the 'Iris Plus' Gen 11 GPU, present in the Ice Lake laptop processors, compared to the old UHD 620 graphics chips. That the Gen 11 GPU features a much-needed performance boost over its older Gen 9.5 GPUs, when it was tested on some of the most popular eSports titles, it still hasn't hit the 1080p 60 FPS mark on many titles.

That's where the Gen 12 GPU talk comes in. According to Kenichiro Yasu, director of Intel's technology headquarters, the new Tiger Lake CPUs arriving in 2020 will incorporate the new GPU Xe architecture, which is focused offering twice as much performance as Ice Lake's Gen 11 GPUs. Mr. Yasu has stressed that while current Iris chips offer about 30 FPS at 1080p in modern eSports titles, Gen 12 Xe GPUs would offer a noticeable performance boost. Intel is claimed to be targeting 60 FPS at 1080p. This statement is especially important for most laptop gamers.
