The Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors are perhaps the most popular today, especially when it comes to gaming, but in certain sectors of the market they are completely ignored. For example, workstation users have other hardware needs, and typically turn to ECCs, more stable platforms, and certified controllers. That's where the new family of Intel Xeon E3 v6 processors based on Kaby Lake will find their utility.

The new range comes with a total of eight processors, which start from the lower model Xeon E3-1220 v6 with its four cores and a maximum frequency of 3.5GHz, to the top version Xeon E3-1280 v6 with four cores, eight threads and a turbo frequency of 4.2GHz.

Intel Xeon E3-1200 v6: 8MB cache, ECC RAM up to 64GB, and Socket 1151

The TDP (thermal design power) of all the processors in this range revolves around 72W, while the amount of cache is also identical in all of them, specifically 8MB.

Intel said the new models have support for ECC RAMs of up to 64GB and for speeds of up to DDR4-2400. Meanwhile, users of current models with DDR3L RAM will not have to worry, because these units are also compatible.

On the other hand, since they are processors aimed at workstations, all Xeon E3 v6 have support for the following virtualization technologies: TSX-NI, vPro, VT-d and VT-x. In addition, to guarantee greater security of the systems, the CPUs bring various security functions, including AES-NI, SGX, Trusted Execution and OS Guard.

In terms of graphics, the three models that end in 5 (E3-1225, E3-1245 and E3-1275) have the integrated graphics chip HD Graphics P630 with a frequency of 1150 MHz, capable of tripling the performance of the graphics chip of the previous range. In addition, processors with P630 graphics will also be able to seamlessly process professional-grade virtual reality content, among other applications, the company promises.

And lastly, it should be noted that all Xeon E3 v6 processors come with Socket 1151, have dual-channel memory controllers, and will have support for current motherboards with C232 and C236 chipsets, although these will likely require a BIOS update prior to the installation of the processors.

Below we leave you with the complete list of new processors, where you can see more clearly the main differences in terms of number of cores, base speed, turbo speed and prices.
