The launch of AMD's third-generation Ryzen processors has caused a dramatic change in the CPU market, taking the lead from Intel. With Zen 2, AMD offers competitive levels of single-thread performance and gaming performance, while offering more cores / threads than the competition at more convenient prices.

Intel and AMD prepare to launch high-end processors starting in October

Both Intel and AMD reportedly plan to launch new "high-end desktop CPUs" in October. This information comes through sources from motherboard manufacturers.

For AMD this can only mean one thing, Threadripper- based Zen 2 processors are coming from October. We know that AMD has its Ryzen 9 3950X up its sleeve and it will be out in September. The Ryzen 9 3950X will complete AMD's AM4 range offering sixteen cores and 32 threads. AMD is unable to offer more cores on the AM4 platform, so the next step will be the launch of Zen 2-based Threadripper chips to further increase the number of cores available.

On the Intel side, a CPU launch in October could mean a lot of things. Cascade Lake could be coming to X299, and Intel's long-running Comet Lake series of processors could be coming to Z390 or a newer socket. Either way, Intel's new offerings will have to compete with Ryzen's third-generation offerings. This means that Intel will have to be competitive in terms of price and performance if it is to have a chance.

A very interesting second semester is coming for both processor companies, with new products. We still have to know what Intel will do about the third generation Ryzen. We will keep you informed.
