We return to bring you an economic mechanical keyboard, this time from the hand of Krom and his Kempo, a model that has been designed for users who seek to get all the advantages of mechanical switches, but with a price that is as tight as possible at the same time. which maintains a high quality. Krom Kempo offers Kailh Red switches, an RGB lighting system and a comfortable detachable wrist rest.
First of all, we are grateful to Krom for the trust he has placed in giving us the product for analysis.
Krom Kempo technical characteristics
Unboxing and design
The first task will be to look at the presentation of this Krom Kempo, in reality there is nothing new, since the keyboard comes inside a cardboard box with the corporate design of the brand, which means that black and orange. On the front we see a great image of the keyboard along with its most important characteristics such as its RGB lighting system and mechanical character. On the back, its most important specifications are detailed in several languages, including Spanish.
We open the box and we find the documentation, this consists of a warranty card and a quick use guide, which will be great for learning all the keyboard control functions through the key combinations.
We now focus on the Krom Kempo, it is a full keyboard that includes the numerical part on the right, making it perfect for all types of user, although for gaming it is more advisable to opt for a TKL model that will allow us to have both Hands closer to each other, in a more natural position. Its size is 465 x 195 x 38 mm with a weight of 1112 grams. The keyboard construction is excellent, with a design based on high-quality plastic and aluminum to give it greater robustness and a more premium appearance. Its weight is considerable, something that will help it not move on the table.
Krom has included a plastic wrist rest, a great idea to improve ergonomics. Better still is that the palm rest is removable, for this it includes small anchors on the back of the keyboard. This is a success, since the user will decide if he wants to use it or not.
The Krom Kempo is based on a simple but ergonomic design, as almost all keyboards are wedge-shaped to improve comfort when using it.
The manufacturer has opted for a floating key design, which makes the switches to be placed directly on the aluminum base without any unevenness, which gives it a very elegant appearance and makes cleaning easier. Thanks to this design there is no indentation in which dirt can accumulate, resulting in a much more hygienic keyboard.
Just above the number block we see the brand logo next to the LED indicators for the numeric keypad lock, the caps lock and the gaming mode that deactivates the Windows key to avoid accidental minimizations in the middle of the game. The Krom Kempo features include 6-K and NK anti-ghosting function, along with 11 keys with multimedia function on the F1-F11 keys to have the most used controls always at hand, and the possibility of exchanging the cursors with the WASD keys..
Beneath the keys are the Outemu Red switches, an imitation of the Cherry Reds but much cheaper, while maintaining almost all of their features. They are linear and very smooth mechanisms with an activation force of 50 cN, have an activation stroke of 2 mm and a maximum stroke of 4 mm. They are switches specially indicated for video games, although they are perfectly valid for other tasks such as writing, in fact, preferring one or the other is more a matter of taste and preference.
A key extractor has been included on the back to help us remove them, very useful for cleaning the keyboard and keeping it as it was the first day. The two lifting legs and the non-slip rubber feet are also appreciated to make it more stable on our desk along with its considerable weight.
The keyboard works with a 1.8 meter braided cable and ends in a gold plated USB connector to improve contact and prevent metal corrosion over time.
As for the Krom Kempo RGB LED lighting system, the keyboard does not include any software, so everything is managed using key combinations. The keyboard has 9 lighting modes to choose from, so that they are always visible and easily located in your night gaming sessions. Krom has also included several profiles specific to games, to access them we only have to press and hold the FN key and then press the keys 1-5 at the top.
Final words and conclusion about Krom Kempo
Krom has always shown once again that it knows how to make excellent peripherals without the price being high. In this case it is not an exception, since the Krom Kempo offers us a very solid mechanical keyboard, with a high level of quality and an elegant appearance. Without a doubt the manufacturer has taken the Krom Kernel as a base, and has improved the weaknesses of that as the absence of the palm rest. This keyboard is one step further from Krom towards excellence in this type of peripherals, it is a keyboard that can look from you to you to many of the heavyweights without any kind of complex.
Outemu switches are a great alternative to Cherry MX for a lower price, these mechanisms assure us that we have a keyboard for many years. Its operation is very pleasant, the truth is that in a blind test it would be almost impossible to differentiate them from the Cherry MX Red. These switches seem to be one step above the Kailh and very close to the level of the Cherry and Gateron.
Finally, its management through key combinations is really very comfortable, this means that the keyboard does not depend on any specific operating system, we also save ourselves from having a program in the background consuming system resources.
Krom Kempo is for sale for an approximate price of 80 euros, it is somewhat more expensive than the previous models of the brand, but it is also more complete so it is justified. The inclusion of software and the recording of macros to improve its possibilities are the only thing that we miss, if they add it to their next keyboard we will be talking about something that has reached excellence.
