The evolution of wikipedia until today
Table of contents:
Wikipedia is a digital encyclopedia that was created without profit and that is currently financed by different donations and that has an inordinate number of volunteers who have made more than 2 billion editions of articles in almost 300 different languages.
Wikipedia started out as a democratic system that changed over time.
The initiative was born to achieve the objective of generating knowledge, and that over the years has grown incredibly, gaining a lot of popularity, occupying one of the ten most visited websites in the world.
Currently the Future Internet Magazine published a new study where it determines the new path taken by this company; It seems that he has been moving further away from his ideals of equality and progress every day.
The initiative to carry out this study came about due to the need for Simón DeDeo, a scientist from Indiana University, to know how this community through social pressure enforces the established norms. This scientist, together with a student from the same university, decided to examine the hierarchies and lines of behavior between the editors of Wikipedia, taking 15 years of work as data, which means that they would be studying the organization from its foundation until today.
At first this organization was very small, started when the Internet had just begun to take shape in the non-profit world, which only sought to share knowledge and attract users who wanted to learn something unknown. However today the company grew in such a way that it can be compared to the size of the city of Santa Fe in New Mexico.
The truth of all this is that the organization has been structuring itself in such a way in recent years, that it has sought to control the web portals dedicated to this same industry, and ranking each of its members so that they have power of making decisions to advance financially and commercially; making it increasingly difficult to access new volunteers and even some who are already within the organization.
