The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) gave notice to Nintendo, HTC, Microsoft, HTC, ASUS and Hyundai in early April for illegally telling their customers that third-party repair voids the warranty on their electronic products. These brands place warranty void stickers on their products, if someone opens them, the stickers are broken and the warranty is voided.
The FTC says warranty stamps are illegal
Lois Greisman, Associate Director of Marketing Practices for the FTC, sent a letter to all of the above companies on April 9th, reporting that such warranty stamps are illegal, and that they have 30 days to change their official warranty policies. In addition, it says that it can take legal action against them in case of not doing so.

The FTC believes that all six companies are violating the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975, which states that no manufacturer charging more than $ 5 for a product may place repair restrictions on a device that offers a warranty. Despite being illegal, many companies have such restrictions.
“This letter alerts you that breaches of the Warranty and FTC Laws may lead to legal action. The FTC investigators have copied and retained the online pages in question, and we intend to review your company's written warranty and promotional materials after 30 days. You should review the FTC Warranty and Laws and, if necessary, review your practices to meet the Fact requirements. By sending this letter, we do not waive the FTC's right to take legal action and seek appropriate injunctive and judicial action against it based on past or future violations. ”
Nintendo, HTC, Microsoft, HTC, ASUS and Hyundai have yet to comment.
