The European Union wants the telecommunications of the old continent to not lose competitiveness at any time. But they are also careful and do not want the market to become an oligopoly with a few companies dominating the market. Something that lawmakers have accomplished by rejecting looser legislation for large companies.

The EU wants operators to share their fiber networks

Europe wants the demand for data and speed to be answered, but that should not be at the cost of losing a competitive market like the current one and benefiting only large companies. So a vote has taken place in which the European Union appears to be in favor of forcing companies to offer their rivals access to their networks.

Sharing network access

As most of you know, fiber optics has very high costs. Its installation is more laborious and ends up generating high costs. And operators, not surprisingly, want to see a return on their investment. Legislation betting on the opening of networks can be problematic for large operators such as Orange, Telefónica or Deutsche Telekom.

However, the European Union does not see it that way and wants companies to open their networks in those countries where they have a majority deployment. For example, in Spain, Telefónica has to share its fiber throughout Spain, with the exception of 66 cities.

Starting in 2019, this new legislation is expected to reach both the European and national levels in the different member countries. Therefore, it is expected that this will be when large telecommunications companies will be forced to open their networks. What do you think of this measure?
