2020: Amd wants to get a 10% share with the 2nd generation of epyc

AMD has set its goal for 2020: to achieve a 10% market share in the server sector with the 2nd generation of EPYC. We tell you more inside.
It seems that AMD managers are giving a lot of interviews. In the end, new news ends up coming to light. This time, it's Ruth Cotter, vice president of global marketing for AMD, who has given an interview at the UBS Global Tech Conference.
Next, we will tell you everything.
Regain your market share in the server and desktop segments
Although Ruth devoted herself in the interview to unveiling the efforts of her second generation of EPYC chips , she did not want to keep a detail of what AMD's plans are for 2020. Since EPYC was launched, they have won numerous contracts with the majority from HPC providers, even with cloud service providers like Microsoft Azure and Amazon AWS.
Currently, its market share in the server sector is over 7%, but AMD's goal is to recover the 26% it previously had with Opteron processors . However, they have ant thinking: "little by little". Currently, its current objective is to achieve 10% for the second quarter of 2020.
So, in the short term, the set goal doesn't seem all that difficult for AMD to achieve, given the potential of the second-generation EPYC. There are reports that ensure that AMD could achieve that market share even before the second quarter of 2020. This is due to the manufacturing problem Intel is experiencing with its 14nm processors .
Our first generation of EPYC was called Naples, and just in August we launched our second generation called Rome. We have a 7% market share today, Tim, if you take a look at the IDC TAM, they mean around 20 million units.
We also aim to recover the historic 26% market share. But, before, to have credibility in such an ambitious objective, we have to obtain “the double digit” of market share first. So, our goal is to get 10% share in Q2 2020.
In June 2018, former Intel CEO Brian Krzanich stated that his job was to not let AMD get 15-20% share. In less than 3 years, AMD has created a generation of processors that has grown continuously.
Bob Swan, current SEO at Intel, said in a recent interview that he was not interested in pursuing the biggest chip market share because he believes that this is detrimental to the company's growth.
And is that, one of the great advantages that EPYC Rome has over Intel, is that its socket is compatible with Naples. This means that everyone who previously used Naples can take advantage of the compatibility of EPYC Rome processors from day one.
Zen 3 comes back to the fore
Ruth Cotter also took the opportunity to talk about the next generation of Zen 3 processors, which will be based on a new architecture. It will promise to provide gains in IPC, faster frequencies, and more cores than before.
Regarding the desktop market, AMD declares that the maximum share of its history was 25%, but they are not so far from achieving it again because they assure that they hold 18%. Not only do they believe they can achieve it again, but they can surpass it in 2020. This was stated by Ruth.
Our highest market share in the desktop processor sector was 25%. If you take a look at the Mercury data and our current 17%, we see no reason why we won't go for those numbers again. We're going to get our maximum historical share first, and then we can talk about where we go next.
After so much news from AMD, a certain alert is generated about what may happen in a few months in the computer sector. We see many managers talking about how great the Zen 3 and Zen 4 processors are going to be, when there is still a long way to go.
Will the upward trend in Ryzen and EPYC chips continue? Will they dominate the market even more? Will Intel give a firm answer? Now, we only have statements from managers and doubts. Hopefully in a few months everything will be clearer
We recommend the best processors on the market
What do you think? Do you think they are very ambitious or that they can achieve it?
