AMD confirms that AM4 motherboards with 300 and 400 series chipsets will have support for PCIe 4.0

When AMD launched Zen, they said they would support the AM4 platform until 2020, allowing users to seamlessly update their systems to the company's latest and greatest processors. This compatibility comes with some logical drawbacks, as the latest motherboards were delivered with an improved feature set, with optimized 400 series designs and better memory compatibility, while future motherboards (500 series hypothetically) They will support PCIe 4.0, a new feature for Zen 2 processors.

Until now, it was assumed that existing AM4 motherboards would simply use PCIe 3.0 with third-generation Ryzen processors, but the latest news at CES has confirmed that motherboard manufacturers have already gotten PCIe 4.0 to work so well on motherboards from the 300 series as in 400 series. This functionality would already be working through experimental BIOS updates.

Compatibility assured, but not on all motherboard models

AMD has confirmed that PCIe 4.0 can work on existing motherboards but that support will depend on each of the manufacturers and if their models can be validated to work with that improved bandwidth.

PCIe 4.0 support will only be possible on specific motherboard lines as track lengths from the processor that exceed six inches will present complications. This means that the primary PCIe 16x lanes will be PCIe 4.0 compliant, but others will likely only work with PCIe 3.0.

As we get closer to the launch of Ryzen 3000, we will surely find out what the current AM4 motherboards will be that will support PCIe 4.0.
