Zinc batteries are closer than we think

Currently most devices have a lithium battery. They allow you to store energy in a compact way and you can also charge them hundreds of times without major problems. In general they are a great option, although they also have their flaws.

Zinc batteries are closer than we think

The main two are that the materials with which these batteries are made are scarce (lithium and cobalt). The other is that they can catch fire if they are not treated properly. For this reason, alternatives are sought. Zinc is one of them. It offers great performance on non-rechargeable alkaline batteries and can make them safer and cheaper. The reason zinc is not used for batteries is that a charge of zinc oxide is generated when charging and discharging cycles.

Will there be zinc batteries?

A group of researchers from the Naval Research Laboratory in America work on solutions to this problem. They have found two ways to do it. One of them is to give a sponge structure to the material, to make it porous. The second is to add bismuth and indium to control chemical reactions.

In the tests carried out, with zinc anodes and nickel cathodes, between 100 and 150 charge and discharge cycles have been carried out before the battery lost half its capacity. Also, they are less heavy than lithium batteries and could store more charge.

We hope that these experiments will pay off, and we may soon have zinc battery-powered cell phones. What do you think of this news?
