USB 4.0 connections will arrive in late 2020
Table of contents:
In recent times we have seen the evolution of USB 3.0 with versions USB 3.1 and 3.2 that have increased bandwidth progressively based on the demands of the sector. USB 4.0 is preparing to enter scenes in about a year and a half, with impressive speeds.
USB 4.0 will offer speeds of up to 40Gbit / s
You just got used to USB 3.0, 3.1 and recently 3.2 right? It has been a confusing mess with the renowned denominators. But basically, the USB Promoter Group is finalizing the specifications of the new USB 4.0 standard and the first products are expected in 2020.
USB 4.0 is in revision 0.7 and the USB Promoter Group will finish it in a month or so with some availability in 2020. The most significant change of USB 4.0 is that it is based on Intel's Thunderbolt 3 technology and reaches a speed of up to 40Gbit / s.
This speed means doubling the 20 Gbit / s offered by USB 3.2 (2 × 2). USB Promoter Group finds the differences so great that they are considering creating a new logo for themselves, we'll see. USB 4.0 would be compatible with existing devices with USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3. The new standard also adapts protocol support such as the display port on Thunderbolt 3.
This measure will surely make Thunderbolt 3 connections slowly be replaced by USB 4.0, since they would offer the same speed, so a 'coexistence' of both in the market would not make much sense, unless Thunderbolt 4 was announced to further increase their connection speeds.
