Total and global shipments of motherboards are expected to drop 10% in 2018 after the global PC market experienced a continuing decline in 2017, particularly in the DIY PC sector, which is expected to reduce its market size by more 15% in the year, according to reliable sources that are in the supply market.

Motherboard sales will continue to fall in 2018

Sales of commercial motherboards that we see on any personal computer have been declining for 4 years. In 2013 the sales of motherboards had been more than 75 million, in 2016 that figure fell to 50 million units sold. Although we still do not have sales figures for 2017, it is estimated that 43 million motherboards will have been sold. If the 10% reduction is credible, in 2018 motherboard sales will have fallen below 40 million units.

Gigabyte, due to its business restructuring process, has seen its motherboard shipments drop sharply to 12.6 million units in 2017, up from 16.2 million units shipped the previous year.

However, some market watchers are optimistic about Gigabyte's operations to return stable in the first half of 2018, which will allow the company to recover its lost orders.

This drop in motherboard sales makes sense. For example, a 6-year-old processor, like the i5 2600K, is still a good choice, even for gaming, so an upgrade to new generations of processors and motherboards would still not be strictly necessary (at least in the Intel platform), not to mention with slightly newer processors than that.
