Lenovo has announced the new ThinkPad P1 and P72 notebooks, workstations intended for professional users where the former focuses on offering an ultra-thin design and the latter on maximum performance. Let's go see them.
New ThinkPad P1 and P72, the high-end for Lenovo workstations
We start by talking about the ThinkPad P1, which maintains the line characterized by the use of materials such as magnesium or carbon fiber, but with a design that seeks to approach the X1 Carbon due to its reduced thickness.
Specifically, the P1 is 18.4mm thick, and a respectable weight for its 1.7kg specs. Regarding the specifications, we can have processors up to the Intel Core i7-8850H 6-core and 12-wire at 4.3GHz turbo, or the Intel Xeon E-2176M 6-core at 4.4GHz turbo.
For the Xeon configuration, ECC RAM memory will be used , which can be up to 64GB (up to 32 with ECC). The storage, predictably upgradeable, will be exclusively an NVMe SSD of up to 4 TB.
We're unaware of the impact of such a fine design on the P1's cooling, but hopefully it's good enough not to suffer from a major throttling.
The graphics card used in the ThinkPad P1 is the NVIDIA Quadro P2000 with 4GB of GDDR5 VRAM. In addition, the 15.6-inch screen will have the option of 1080p IPS or 4K UHD IPS Touch. The battery life is up to 13 hours.
In the case of the ThinkPad P72, this one will stand out much less for its thickness, with its ~ 26-31mm. Performance options change from the P1 in several ways: Quadro support up to the P5200 (16GB VRAM, VR-Ready), 17.3 ″ display, 4 DIMM slots instead of 2 (upgradeable) with up to 128GB of DDR4 RAM, support 2 M.2 PCIe SSDs and 2 SATA HDD / SSDs, or longer battery life with up to 18 hours. For those looking for more power and performance than smaller size and lightness, it is crowned as an excellent option.
ThinkPad P Workstations are usually some of the most serious options you can find, with excellent power capabilities , strength, durability, expandability, and features. It is basically the antagonists of the Macbook Pro, without pretending to say that the latter are better or worse, but that their audience is usually completely opposite and have completely different approaches.
Both notebooks include certifications for various professional design suites, fingerprint reader, their award-winning splash resistant keyboard. Regarding the ports, the following are included:
- ThinkPad P1: 2x USB 3.0, SD card reader, smart card reader, Kengsinton lock, power connector, HDMI 2.0, Mini Gigabit Ethernet, microphone / headphone jack, 2 Thunderbolt 3 USB-C. Both on the sides. ThinkPad P72: On the sides 1 microphone / headphone jack, 3 USB 3.0, SD reader, Mini DisplayPort, Gigabit Ethernet. On the back, 1 USB 3.0, HDMI 2.0, 2 Thunderbolt 3 USB-C, and the power connector.
We still do not have prices for Spain of these laptops. However, 2000 euros or more is expected for the base configuration, and several thousand euros for a hypothetical configuration with all the characteristics and a 5-year on-site warranty. This is a range of extremely car notebooks for what they are the prices we expect.
