Lenovo Yoga 730 is a new generation convertible laptop that has come to offer the best possibilities to its users. It is a very compact device, but with excellent features and a high-quality screen, with which you can work comfortably and see all your multimedia content in the best possible way.

It is the predecessor of the Lenovo Yoga 720 but with certain improvements: eighth generation processor, a slightly better screen, the incorporation of two Thunderbolt 3 connections that make 4 LANES PCI Express lines and a supposed improved autonomy.

This laptop has not been loaned by Lenovo as it has been a whim to retire my Lenovo Thinkpad T460 as a travel laptop. Will it live up to the circumstances? We will see it during the analysis!

Lenovo Yoga 730 technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

The Lenovo Yoga 730 laptop is sold in a high-quality cardboard box to ensure the best protection for your device. The box print is very good quality, with a design based on Lenovo corporate colors, and showing high quality images as well as its most important features.

If we open the box we find the Lenovo Yoga 730 along with all the accessories, everything perfectly arranged and protected to avoid movements and damage during transport. A luxury presentation for one of the best products we can find on the market.

Lenovo Yoga 730 is a very compact laptop, with dimensions of only 30.68 cm x 21.63 cm x 1.39 cm and a weight of 1.19 Kg. The equipment is made of aluminum and is available in several versions in platinum, steel gray and copper, thus perfectly adjusting to the tastes of users. The chassis is made of the best quality aluminum, which ensures a very robust design with a very light weight. In Spain we can only find it in its platinum aluminum variant, but we can hopefully buy it in copper or steel gray.

The screen is 13.3 inches, it is based on IPS technology; and it is available in versions with 1080p and 4K resolution. Both versions use the highest quality panels, with excellent color rendering and 178-degree viewing angles in both planes.

In our case we have the version with a 1080p panel, more than enough considering its measured size. Although the 4k version exists, from experience in other laptops, everything looks too small and the processor temperatures rise. A fact to keep in mind and that we also highlight is that the screen is touch, something that will facilitate handling, as a good 2 in 1.

Lenovo has wanted to take great care of the aesthetics and this screen has bezels of only 5.9 mm, a brightness of 300 nits, and hinges that allow it to be opened up to 360º, which offers many possibilities of use. At the top the webcam has been included, with a 720p video recording resolution. This webcam allows you to use Windows Hello, to maximize the security of the computer, and to make more secure payments with Paypal.

One of its most negative points is the lack of a LAN RJ45 connection. This forces us to buy a HUB with a USB Type-C connection that will take out a LAN, HDMI and card reader connection that it already lacks. We believe that with the space we see, it would have been possible to attach some of these characteristics. But it seems that this type of design is becoming more common.

Lenovo Active Pen 2, the pen you will fall in love with

The perfect complement to this display is the Lenovo Active Pen 2 pen, which offers the touch and experience of a normal pen. It is a digital pen with 4096 levels of sensitivity, twice as accurate as competitive models.

This Lenovo Active Pen 2 communicates with the laptop via Bluetooth and will allow us great possibilities of use together with Windows Ink technology. We assure you that the level of pressure and the precision it offers us is almost unique. Personally I have not played better 2 in 1 for many years. Although I'm not an artist, because I'm not good at it, designer friends have tried it and loved it.

Hardware with power but with a very moderate consumption

As for the hardware, it is available with eighth generation Intel Core processors, our unit has a quad core Intel Core i5-8250U based on the Coffee Lake architecture at 1.6-3.4 GHz, which makes it very powerful while very efficient with the use of energy.

The latest generation of Intel Core processors offers up to a 40% performance increase over the previous generation, with an unprecedented touch screen and pen sensitivity, faster startups, and much smoother multitasking. This processor is accompanied by 8 GB of DDR4 RAM, there are also versions with 16 GB to fit the needs of all users.

As for storage, Lenovo has mounted a 128 GB NVMe SSD, allowing both the operating system and the most demanding applications to load very quickly. Lenovo also offers the ability to configure it with 256GB or 512GB of storage.

This type of storage is also very efficient with energy consumption, making the 48W / h battery last up to 11.5 hours. The battery includes fast charging technology, so you are always ready to go on the go. Thanks to Rapid Charge technology , 15 minutes of charging will give you 2 hours of use.

The sound is delivered by the JBL speakers, which are Dolby Atmos certified, which creates a three-dimensional listening space in which the sound comes to life completely and in depth in your headphones, to offer the best multimedia experience. Playing, listening to music and watching movies will be a great experience with this equipment.

Two Thunderbolt 3 connections

The connectivity options of the Lenovo Yoga 730 include 2 Thunderbolt type C , a USB 3.0 port, a 3.5 mm connector for audio, Bluetooth 4.2 and a Wifi AC 2 × 2 network card to be able to navigate at full speed without the hassle of cables.

It is very important to highlight the importance of these two Thunderbolt 3 connections that offers us 4 PCI Express lines to connect an external graphics card, such as the Aorus GTX 1080 Gaming BOX or GTX 1070 that Gigabyte offers or to mount a custom one to our liking.

If you are looking for a Thunderbolt 3 dual connection ultrabook for 1000 euros, the Lenovo Yoga 730 is the laptop to buy.

It is one of the differential points with respect to its little brother Lenovo Yoga 720, and I know that many users are considering changing their 720 for this model in its most basic version.

High-quality backlit membrane keyboard

Finally, we highlight the keyboard, with chiclet-type membrane technology that offers us a great experience. It is true that it is not up to the Lenovo Thinkpad, but it kicks most laptops in its range.

It is good to know its operation is very quiet, and it has a backlight so you can use it without problems in very dark situations. As we have already mentioned in the previous paragraph, the tour is quite good.

The trackpad is perhaps one of its most improvable points but it fulfills perfectly. It goes fast, it is smooth and allows some gestures. Although at home we ended up using the touch screen for convenience to move around the applications and the web browser.

The fingerprint reader perfectly meets perfection. Obviously, it is not as fast as that of a high-end smartphone, but we must leave our finger for a second to read the fingerprint well.

Test of performance

The Intel Core i5-8250U is one of the great innovations that launched in the last quarter of 2017. It is the first Intel quad-core processor real + HT low power and such a high frequency with so little TDP. This is a great evolutionary step for laptops. The Lenovo Yoga 730 complements it with 8 GB of RAM and its integrated graphics card.

At the software level it is quite complete. We really like its dashboard and the ability to quickly create macros. We would like to see a somewhat more modern interface to measure up to a great laptop.

First of all we are going to see the speed of the M.2 NVME disk with the popular program CristalDiskMark in its latest version, this has been the result obtained. As we can see it is a fairly fast disk even being the 128 GB version.

As for the processor, we have used Cinebench R15, which has given a really impressive score for a laptop with 699 points. Not having a dedicated graphics card we have to reduce the number of hard and pure benchmarks. We have decided to use: PCMARK and AIDA66.

Temperatures

The team always keeps me between 39 to 42 ºC at rest in its 4 cores. Very normal temperatures for such a slim design and built-in cooling in such a small thickness. When we put the processor to 100% it begins to suffer from throttling when it reaches 97 ºC (peak) and 92ºC of maximum average temperature. Are they bad temperatures? They throw to the deficiency, but to all the thin notebooks this happens to him, until a very optimal cooling comes out for them, something that is not at all easy.

Final words and conclusion about Lenovo Yoga 730

The Lenovo Yoga 730 hits the market to meet the needs of users who travel a lot and need a laptop that weighs as little as possible. It also meets the needs of the most creative users with its Lenovo Active Pen 2 and its great precision when drawing.

In our tests we have seen that we liked the performance level a lot, at least in these months of intensive use. It must be made clear that this laptop is not designed for gaming, but for work and multimedia playback. You can play an overwatch game, downloading graphics, but it is not the best use we can give it. Although if you are looking to have a gaming PC, take advantage and buy an EGPU to get the most out of Thunderbolt 3 technology.

We recommend reading the best PC configurations on the market

What are the main differences from the Lenovo Yoga 720? Although at the design level it seems that not much has changed we have two details to take into account. The incorporation of two Thunderbolt 3 connections with its 4 PCI Express (LANES) lines and the incorporation of a stylus inside the bundle. We also highlight that its screen is an excellent all-terrain that will captivate us over the days.

Currently you have it available in the Lenovo online store with a starting price of 1099 euros, although in June I bought it for just 999 euros for the most basic version. I recommend that you wait for an offer that tends to make lenovo of a 10% discount or that reaches the main Spanish online stores. What do you think of this ultrabook? Do you think it's worth it? We want to know your opinion!
