The differences between the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact and its big brother Sony Xperia Z5 are few, being the same hardware but with a different screen size and dimensions. Sony also released the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium that we have not yet reviewed and we hope to test it soon.

In this review of the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact you will be able to know the main characteristics and functions of the smartphone. Here we go!

We appreciate the trust of Sony for the transfer of the product for analysis:

Technical characteristics Sony Xperia Z5 Compact

Design, build quality and display

The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact comes protected in a small box. On its cover we see an image of the back of the product and in large letters the model. On the back, the number indicates the two IMEI numbers and the serial number of the product.

Once we open it we find the following bundle:

  • Sony Xperia Z5 Compact. MicroUSB cable and wall charger. Documentation.

Although the hardware of the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact is very similar to that of the Z5, we cannot say the same about the design. The Compact line does not use the same metal trim as the Z5, but a plastic cover. The first memory that will surely come to your mind when you see the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact is a form of ice. In relation to the Xperia Z3 Compact, it had a small increase in dimensions and weight: 127.3 x 64.9 x 8.64 mm for the Z3 against the 127 x 65 x 9 mm for the Compact, weighing in at 139 grams.

In relation to the Xperia Z3 Compact, there were only a few changes in relation to the position of some hardware resources, for example, such as the location of the front camera and the proximity sensor, as well as the location of the speakers in the front part. On the right side we have the button of the fingerprint reader to unlock the device with the screen off, which needs to be pressed. To allow the use of a biometric sensor, the volume button was placed closer to the camera button.

The back is frosted glass, just like on the Xperia Z3 Compact, but the camera has been moved to the far left, and the LED flash is positioned next to the lens. The screen is 4.6 inches, and this is what sets the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact apart from the other smartphones in the new series. For those who still want to have the opportunity to put the phone in their pocket and be able to use it with just one hand, the new Sony compact may be a good option.

Frosted glass is a treatment that is done to the glass so that it becomes translucent while receiving the light, that is, it gives a blurring effect. Thanks to this effect the new Sony Xperia Z5 does not have marks left on the back.

The screen of the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels with 319 ppi . And, as well as the design, the amount of RAM and the battery capacity, it is one of the differences of this model. Even in HD, the quality of the screen is undeniable, perhaps the excess brightness can annoy users who do not use manual configuration. However, color saturation is balanced, the screen is very sharp, and using IPS LCD technology offers advantages in external environments. The 319 ppi is more than enough for great image quality.

The viewing angles of the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact are good and it is also possible to identify what is on the screen when it is at a 30º angle. Another change in the screen quality of the Xperia Z5 line was the refinement of touch recognition, which is now more sensitive and is recognized when the user touches the screen, even partially wet. In the past, it was necessary to dry the display in order for the touch to be recognized.

software

The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact has the same user interface as the Xperia Z5. The smartphone leaves the factory with the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop version integrated into the Xperia UI theme. Sony brings many of its own installed applications and the one highlighted here is the native radio service, since Sony brings an integrated radio antenna to the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact.

The performance of the operating system is good, smooth and lag-free. Obviously, you do not experience problems in the tactile response of the navigation buttons and the status bar.

The fact that Sony has optimized the operating system to avoid overheating the hardware had its positive point in the launch of its new compact. Great job!

Performance, fingerprint and sound reader

This model was built with the Snapdragon 810 processor (MSM8994) signed by Qualcomm , with a frequency of 1.5 GHz and 2GHz, 64-bit and Adreno 430 graphics card (GPU). The difference between the Z5 Compact and the Z5 is that this model has 2GB of RAM, that is, we have 1GB less here than in the Sony Xperia Z5. So far, the device has only one variant of internal storage, which will be 32GB, and offers the possibility of expanding it via microSD up to 128GB.

The performance of the fingerprint reader is as good as that of the Sony Xperia Z5 that we analyzed a few months ago. Quickly take the fingerprint, although we continue to see somewhat uncomfortable button positions.

Sony has optimized the audio quality of the Xperia Z line, since this was one of the points that many analysts and users demanded in the last survey carried out by the manufacturer. Thus, the sound from the front speakers sound more powerful and clear. MP3 audio quality uses DSEE HX technology, which offers high sound resolution.

Camera and battery

The Z5 Compact uses the 23 megapixel IMX300 Exmor RS sensor and offers an autofocus of 0.03 seconds. Due to the location of the sensor, the camera no longer suffers as much instability. One feature of the camera that deserves to be highlighted is continuous autofocus, which automatically shifts the focus in the image according to the proximity of the lens object.

In this way, the camera sensor recognizes the moving object and adjusts the focus on the closest image very quickly.

The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact has a power autonomy of up to 2 days of use without the need for charging. In relation to the Xperia Z3 Compact, however, we had an increase in battery capacity, that is, we now have 2, 700 mAh instead of 2, 600 in the predecessor model. Another highlight is the battery saving modes, such as the wonderful Stamina and Ultra Stamina .

Conclusion about the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact

The Sony Compact line is the only one that lives up to the compact name and should never be compared to the mini smartphones that we have on the market today. This model brings the same processor, graphics card, camera and audio that incorporates its older brother Sony Xperia Z5. Their differences? We found a more compact screen, 1 GB less RAM and a resolution HD 720 x 1280 px.

The only two criticisms that could be made to the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact are the design, since despite the technical specifications, the visual appearance is less attractive than that of the Sony Z3 Compact. Another point that could be reviewed by the manufacturer is the screen resolution, which could be FullHD. But perhaps it did not make it to compete autonomously directly with the Z5.

Sony launched this smartphone on September 2, 2015. We currently have this interesting 4.6-inch phone available in online stores for an approximate price of 440 euros on Amazon (see link below).
