Seagate has been testing its new technology that improves the density of hard drives, the aforementioned HAMR (Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording). Seagate's obsession is to increase the density of the disks without having to resort to other solutions in order to increase the capacity of the hard disks. The company says internal testing with 16TB HAMR discs is going well, and that it is expected to launch on the market during 2019.
Seagate hard drives with HAMR technology are almost ready to launch in 2019
The plan is to continue increasing the capacity of HAMR-based hard drives over the years. Seagate projects that the first 20TB drives will be released in 2020, and 48TB hard drives in a standard 3.5-inch form factor by 2024. Seagate further claims that HAMR-based units far exceed the reliability parameters required by the industry, making the company optimistic about the attention its technology will receive once it is available to general customers.
These new hard drives would arrive first for companies and then for customers in general.
