We will see 18 and 20 TB hard drives next year

The 18TB hard drive would be based on the same nine-platter platform already used by the company's 16TB Exos model, meaning it will be relatively easy to start mass production of this model.

In general, Seagate's roadmap indicates that the 18TB disk will use conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology. In addition to this product, Seagate's plans also include a 20TB HDD based on Stepped Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology to be released in 2020.

Future plans

Some Seagate customers are rating HAMR-based 16TB hard drives, so they will likely be ready to deploy 20TB HAMR drives, alongside 30TB in 2023/2024 up to 50TB in 2026. It should Note that Seagate is preparing HAMR hard drives with one and two actuators, to provide adequate performance and capacity for different customers. This would follow current Seagate dual-actuator MACH.2 units.
