Companies like Qualcomm, Samsung and Huawei are pushing their efforts to the limit when it comes to the official launch of 5G connectivity. However, smartphones with this hardware will go on sale only in 2019, although some device manufacturers are eager for this to come sooner, in late 2018.

Phone makers want 5G by 2019

Qualcomm is expected to announce its Snapdragon 855, which is the company's first 5G-compliant SoC and which is built with a 7nm architecture, so there is a chance it will arrive in 2018.

Durga Prasad Malladi, executive vice president of Qualcomm Engineering , said some original equipment manufacturers want to introduce 5G-enabled smartphones ahead of the agreed launch schedule for 2019. 5G mobile services will be available in limited areas by the second half of 2018, but that would include the commercialization of routers that would replace broadband Internet access. Until now, no one has started talking about the availability of 5G-enabled mobile phones before 2019.

ZTE was planning to launch 5G-enabled headsets later this year, but that dream is over after the seven-year ban on the US Department of Commerce. it imposed on the company that exempts it from acquiring US technologies. On the other hand, Samsung would be in a position to do so.

Mr. Malladi also confirmed that a 5G alternative to Voice over LTE (VoLTE) will be introduced, but that it will take slightly longer. At first, the specs that support 5G will be non-standalone in nature, meaning the devices will connect to 4G LTE and 5G simultaneously. Until the technology is updated, VoLTE will continue to be available anyway.
