Superdata has shared some very interesting statistics on PC gaming revenue in recent years. According to their data, revenue from Free-to-Play (F2P) games has doubled since 2012. On the other hand, retail revenues from traditional PCs and consoles have only increased by 60%. As such, it is not surprising that most publishers are focusing on the "games as services" model with microtransactions.

Free-to-Play gaming revenue has doubled since 2012

As shown in the chart above, revenue from F2P games currently stands at $ 22 billion. On the other hand, retail revenues for traditional PCs and consoles stand at $ 8 billion. Yes, F2P gaming revenue is almost three times higher than the combined revenue of traditional PC and console games. And that says a lot.

FIFA 17 revenue from microtransactions

Additionally, Superdata shared an interesting graph about FIFA 17 revenue. As we can see, most of the game's revenue comes from microtransactions. While many gamers are crying out for this microtransaction issue (see Battlefront II), there is a huge audience that is spending money on them. And when there is such a large audience, you can expect EA or any other company to take advantage of it.

With these data on the table, it is understood why more and more video games are betting on a Free-to-Play model that generates money through microtransactions. Also, those more traditional games like Battlefront II that add microtransactions so that it generates money not only with the copy of the game.

Unfortunately for many, microtransactions in games are here to stay.
