Many users of the AMD Ryzen Mobile platform and, to a lesser extent, also of the AMD Ryzen desktop APUs are not happy with the update policy for graphics drivers, as they often lag behind card versions desktop. In addition to frustrating bugs, it also means that these users have to do without optimizations for newer games.

AMD Ryzen Mobile driver updates must be tested and approved by OEMs

The reason Ryzen Mobile-equipped laptops are so behind on driver updates is because OEM manufacturers must approve and release these updates themselves. AMD says that it cannot release the updates by itself due to the specific hardware of each system, which could cause potential problems and unpleasant experiences for the user. The company responds to criticism in a Reddit post, and is committed to improving the upgrade policy alongside OEMs.

"We are determined to work with our OEMs to increase the release rate of AMD Ryzen Mobile processor graphics drivers."

Starting in 2019, AMD will encourage its OEMs to release a graphics driver update for all Ryzen Mobile systems, at least once every six months. Ultimately, the responsibility remains with the OEM, so it's not yet certain that all manufacturers will follow this accelerated new upgrade policy.

Driver updates have always been the big weakness of Vega graphics-based AMD Ryzen Mobile and desktop processors, let's hope the situation changes for the better for all users of these great chips.
