Hard drives are slowly saying goodbye and this trend could accelerate this year, according to DRAMeXchange. The price per gigabyte of 512GB 1TB SSDs is expected to drop below 10 cents for the first time later this year.

SSD drives will continue to drop in price throughout the year

This decline was attributed to “the weakening of the storage momentum due to the cautious stance of PC, smartphone and server / data manufacturers towards end-market sales and high inventory levels, leading to a excessively saturated NAND flash; to the price wars of the main suppliers they are eager to get rid of their 64/72 layer stocks; and for the purpose of price comparison as a result of Intel 3D QLC SSDs. ”

As we see, the explanations for why they are various, but the reality is that the prices of SSD drives are falling rapidly and will continue to do so throughout the year.

DRAMeXchange said lower prices should lead to 128GB SSDs being replaced by their 512GB counterparts as a new standard. Since the price drop is expected to extend to 1TB SSDs, these products should be able to reach a much larger share of the market. Most people already know that SSDs are faster than hard drives, and with prices dropping as capacities increase, there is little reason to go for a traditional magnetic drive.

These price drops in SSD drives are causing changes in almost all sectors of the market. DRAMeXchange said SSDs are now found in more than half of notebooks, and it expects PCIe-format drives to reach a similar share of the market, thanks to relative price parity between them and their SATA counterparts. These changes can lead to better performance in everything from low-end notebooks to high-end builds.

No wonder hard drive manufacturers expect sales to drop sharply during 2019.
