Silicon Motion ensures that the fall in prices for NAND flash memory will be more moderate in the second half of the year
The famous provider of flash memory controllers has reported that its net sales decreased 11% sequentially to $ 123.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2018. "Our fourth quarter sales decreased as expected, " said Kou.
Sales of Silicon Motion's integrated storage products, which primarily include eMMC / UFS controllers and SSDs, as well as industrial SSD and data center solutions, declined nearly 15% sequentially to account for around 80% of revenue company totals in the fourth quarter. SSD controller sales fell about 20% in the quarter, while eMMC / UFS controller sales decreased about 15%.

"We expect the prices of drives using NAND to continue to decline in 2019, which will drive a significant increase in adoption of SSDs by PC customers starting in the middle of this year, " Kou said.
Falling prices for NAND flash technology have discouraged Silicon Motion module makers from acquiring more chips and controllers, Kou said, adding that NAND chip providers have also decided to limit their production. Silicon Motion has also seen its OEM customers affected by unfavorable economic conditions, according to Kou.
With this information, it is likely that the best time to acquire large SSD drives will be in mid-2019, since in the second half of the year the price decline would not be as accelerated.
