After the review of new and interesting mouse of the brand Mars Gaming, we go to see the new keyboard Mars Gaming MK6. This is the first keyboard with optical-mechanical switches of the brand, which comes packed with CHROMA RGB lighting and ready to stand up to other brands' peripherals in terms of performance and design. And the truth is that they are not misdirected, because this keyboard has left us with great sensations and at a very adjusted price for what it offers us. We start this review!

Unboxing and design

This new Mars Gaming MK6 mechanical keyboard comes in a flexible cardboard box with approximately the dimensions of the keyboard and with a color silkscreen on all sides. On the main face we have a photo of the keyboard in all its splendor and working with Dual CHROMA RGB lighting activated.

On the back side we find a lot of information about the product, something extremely useful to know what we buy without having to investigate in the brand's online store. We will have information about the characteristics of its switches, since we are facing an optomechanical keyboard with different variants.

Having seen its packaging, we are going to see what is inside the box, in addition to the Mars Gaming MK6 keyboard very well stored in a foam bag to cushion shock.

In this case we will have a typical user guide, and also some plastic plates to take the palm rest from the keyboard by means of screws, and the four spare keys "A, W, S, D" and of another color, in case we want place them in gaming mode. These are orange.

The palm rest in question is made of ABS plastic and measures 448 mm long by 67 mm wide, and is quite short. It does not have any type of padding and we must install it using the two plates mentioned above and screws, it is not the fastest or most practical, but it will do.

The Mars Gaming MK6 is a really interesting keyboard, of good quality and available in full format, that is, with a numeric keyboard. It is made of ABS plastic for the most part, except for the key installation area, which is made of aluminum. Its dimensions are 448 x 142 x 38 mm, completely standard dimensions and very similar for example to the Razer Hunstman Elite. The weight of the keyboard is around 1055 g, just over a kilo. If we prefer it with the palm rest installed we will have measures of 448 x 205 x 38 mm, that is, we expand the accessibility field by 65 mm to support our wrists or less on it.

The installation of this palm rest will be manually and fixed, with two screwed plastic plates. It does not have LED lighting and it is something basic and quite fine, but the truth is that once installed, we will notice some extra comfort for those who usually use this type of extensions.

If we position ourselves on its sides, we can see that the height of this keyboard is considerable, something also normalized in this type of mechanical distribution. We are talking about 38 mm without extending the front legs. The white areas, as you can imagine, house LED lighting with DUAL CHROMA RGB technology in 16.8 million colors. We will have this around the entire keyboard.

On the sides you can see how the area for the installation of keys and switches is made of aluminum, for better cleaning and durability. In addition, it is a general trend in gaming-type mechanical keyboards from other brands.

If we look at the lower area, we will have a route for the USB cable, either forward or sideways, for maximum comfort and as best suits us. If we extend the two legs in the front area, we can slightly tilt our keyboard to achieve a front height of about 55 mm.

We can also see in the lower area the couplings to install the wrist rest plates.

The Mars Gaming MK6 has a complete configuration with a numeric keypad and double-function F keys, together with an Fn key located on the right side of the space to be able to alternate this functionality with the basic ones of the F keys. We will be able to distinguish three groups of functionalities; F1-F4 will be for volume control and player activation functions, F5-F8 are intended for multimedia playback control functions and finally F9-F12 for different shortcuts such as calculator, F key lock and mail.

We do not have pre-assigned keys to control the keyboard lighting, so it will have to be done using the highly recommended software itself to provide maximum functionality to this product.

The keyboard is QWERTY type with a built-in Ñ key and a silkscreen with large characters that will be backlit.

It is time to talk about the switches of this Mars Gaming MK6, which, of course, will be very important, in the case of a mechanical keyboard.

They are optical-mechanical switches that Mars Gaming has introduced for the first time on this new keyboard to offer us improved performance and on par with other brands. This Optical-Mech technology is based on mechanical push buttons with optical activators where an infrared receiver installed on each key receives the pulsation signal so that the action occurs instantly. This technology is the fastest for this type of keyboard and the most reliable. The total stroke of the keys on pressing will be 4 mm, and the activation stroke will be 2 mm.

Similarly, Mars Gaming MK6 comes in three different switch configurations, which we already know from the reference manufacturer Cherry MX:

Blue color switch: it is the classic mechanical pulsation with the sound of the “click”. The actuation force for this configuration is 60 g. Red color switch: it is the typical linear path, faster and without the typical click. The actuation force for this configuration is 45 g. Brown color switch: it is a mixture between the previous two, both in sensations and in activation weight. The actuation force for this configuration is 55 g.

In our case, we have the version of the blue switch, which is the one that we have to print the most weight on the switch, and the truth is that it is noticeable in rapid presses. The sound is not as loud as on other keyboards, but the feeling in my personal taste is very good, of quality and firmness of the keys. This distribution will be good to play and especially to write, although we will have to deal with the sound, but it is something acceptable.

The connection interface is USB 2.0 type, with a 1.5m gold plated cable. An interesting detail is that even being a keyboard with abundant LED lighting; you only need one port to power all equipment.

We now turn to the lighting section of this Mars Gaming MK6. We have two perfectly differentiated areas, but both with CHROMA RGB technology of 16.8 million colors. The first one is located around the keyboard and we will not have the possibility to configure it using the software. The lighting mode is rainbow type.

The second zone is, of course, the backlight of the keys. The light is located at the base of the switch in its upper area, to distribute all the lighting to the character of each key. Although it is true that the finish is not as spectacular or Premium as in other models, the keys are correctly illuminated. This area will be completely customizable by software, being able to assign an independent color to each of the keys, or interesting animations.

We now turn to give a visual to the software that implements this mechanical gaming keyboard. The first thing to consider is that, like the Mars Gaming MM418 mouse, we are dealing with software specially designed for the model. This means that it will not be compatible for another keyboard model nor is it compatible with other brand products. Something that should be generalized soon to be provided by centralized, generic software for all products.

The software itself is extremely intuitive and easy to operate. Just by pressing the key you want, we can assign one that works for it. So we can also modify the keyboard layout to our liking from this same software.

In the double function keys, we can also assign macros, and the second function that we want from the available list.

If what we want is to customize the lighting, we can also do it by activating the corresponding option in the left area, and we can both choose predefined animations and make our own by individually assigning a color to each letter. The only limitation we will have is to customize the lighting of the keyboard frame, which must always be of the RGB rainbow type.

We will also have three different profiles to quickly load them with the specific configuration we have in each one. Using the Macro Manager button, we can create the actions that we are going to use for the keyboard. The software is available in perfect English.

Final words and conclusion about Mars Gaming MK6

To test such a product it is necessary first to get used to it, writing and testing its functionalities, and that is precisely what we have done. We can say that the comfort of this keyboard is fabulous, with a standard dimensions and key layout exactly the same as those we are used to with other mechanical keyboards, the adaptation period has been instantaneous. The height is just right and the thickness and key spacing too. In addition, we have the four most used spare keys to use when we play.

Although the palm rest is not the best in the world, the truth is that it gives us that point of restraint that we need for users who like to have their wrists slightly elevated. The touch is hard, being plastic and the installation itself is somewhat tedious to remove and put on.

The construction and design of the lighting is also very good, it is a keyboard that in addition to plastic, also has the entire key area made of aluminum, which will provide us with greater durability and cleanliness. The peripheral lighting is very nice and well designed, although we cannot customize it. And the key lighting is somewhat low but fully customizable.

On the part of the optomechanical switches, we have been very satisfied with them, in our case we have the blue type, which gives us a good firmness of the keys and a quite soft touch and sounds, but somewhat harsh, although we stop that we have the bulls two that are softer of course. What we have noticed is that sometimes listening to the sound of the click does not imply the activation of the key, causing erroneous pulsations, so we must press a little more deeply to make sure we get the answer. The switches are very fast and really comfortable, the sound is considerable, although somewhat lower than other models with similar switches.

The software is extremely easy to use, although it is not generic for Mars products, that is, for each product we will have to install its respective software. It has the typical functions of gaming keyboards and meets the minimum requirements.

Surely another of the best assets is the price, we have an optomechanical keyboard for only 60 euros, if we take into account the prices of the competition, it is a serious candidate to be acquired and we think so, because the feelings have been in general, very good and we think he is a worthy rival.
